E70 Sport - Conti DWS review

2 Attachment(s)
Just wanted to share my thought about Continental DWS Tires

I just installed a full set of Front and Rear on my E70 4.8 X, with Sport Package and 20's

Sizes: 275x40R20 front and 315x35r20 rear

Previous tires: Stock Dunlop RFT

I never thought that i would such a difference, major change in road noise and ride quality.

I felt that i was in a sedan thats how quiet and soft these are.
Even with Active suspension, over bumps it felt much softer

haven't tested on the performance level, but i'm sure it will be better then stock Dunlop RFT's.

Apparently front size is on back order on most sites including tire rack, but i managed to find it here and at a lower price too.

this is where i bought them: Discount Tires - Discounttires.com has the lowest prices on tires and wheels, all name brands, and a huge inventory. In most cases, shipping is one to two days guaranteed.

I have these too in same size and can vouch for them as well. Love the comfort and unbelievably quiet.

bimmerpwr 10-12-2010 08:41 AM

I will be putting those in (same size as yours), hopefully this weekend. Have them on my other car (Acura RL) and been very impressed with noise level, comfort, and performance in snowy condition as well as dry & wet. I haven't been able to locate them online (tirerack, discounttire, direcounttiredirect, etc). But my local shop was able to find them.

ZheHbKa 10-12-2010 08:43 AM

they are very hard to find for some reason, local tire shops had rears but fronts were on back order on most sites. i just checks and discount tire doesnt have them anymore

FSETH 10-12-2010 08:43 AM

Don't you already have this thread going?

ZheHbKa 10-12-2010 08:45 AM

yes, but now its in the correct section, i posted it in E53 section by mistake and since iit became active i didnt want to erase it

Do you have arch flarers on your X5? If not, do you have any picture that would show how those bigger wheels set with the body? (stick out? flush?). I am getting 20" this weekend, have not ordered arch extension yet. Actually, not quite sure if I want them or not...yet...

ZheHbKa 10-12-2010 08:48 AM

no i dont have the flares, i'll take some in a few and post them

the wheels are almost flush, dont stick out too much

bimmerpwr 10-12-2010 09:39 AM

Wow, thank you for such fast response!

That really is a close call. I don't want it to look like a ghetto truck (you know those trucks with wheels sticking out way too much) but haven't decided if arch flare looks good or not, I would much rather prefer a flush look...

ZheHbKa 10-12-2010 10:10 AM

no problem, the car is outside my office :)

these are stock size tires, they stick out a little because of the rims

i see your point and yes i definitely was not going for that look.
i like how fender flares look just dont have the time to do it yet, hopefully get around to it soon

i know a lot of people on here expressed interest in purchasing these tires however the front tires 275/40/20 seem to be on national backorder. however i purchased a set on treadepot.com on monday afternoon and received them yesterday.

total for front and rear including shipping was roughly $980... i checked their website and it shows they still have the fronts in stock... while other sites such as tirerack and discount tires still have them on back order. just giving a heads up to whoever really wants them.

Thanks for the heads up! I ordered a set as well! Even called them to make sure and they do seem to be in stock... Total price is better than tirerack...

ZheHbKa 02-22-2011 12:54 PM

nice find!!!

dbox 02-22-2011 02:19 PM

I have the same on mine...love em!

cybervinn 02-22-2011 02:24 PM

Thanks n.gilaj! I just got my X5M 2 weeks ago and been reading a lot on these forum but not have participated, but I had to join this forum just to say THANKS! Awesome find, my set is due tomorrow.

n.gilaj 02-22-2011 08:01 PM

no problem at all... i personally waited about 2-3 months for these things to be in stock and was totally susprised treadepot had them since they still seem to be back ordered everywhere else.. i too just joined the forum to let everyone know

ShantF1 02-22-2011 11:09 PM

How is it performance wise

ShantF1 02-22-2011 11:11 PM

I have bridgestone duller rft

TorontoKhan 02-24-2011 10:37 AM

Thank's a lot for this write up. I am a new X5 owner and I thave the Bridgestone 19" RFTs as well and after reading this excellent review, I am very much inclined to get rid of the RFTs and put these Contis on with 20" replica rims.

However, excuse my ignorance, I believe these are Non-RFT tires?
Since you had them on from last year, how are they doing in past few months? do you see any change/drawbacks etc.? Are you super satisfied with the buy?
And what is the width on the rear tires? 11"? Can you take a picture of both tires from back? just to see how beasty they look.

Thanks in advance!

ZheHbKa 02-24-2011 10:43 AM

i'm very satisfied, now i experienced in dry, wet and snow. ride is still great.

check for pics here:

TorontoKhan 02-24-2011 10:47 AM

Thanks for the quick response. I saw these pictures already, they are too close up to see the beastiness of the tires that changes the outlook of the vehicle altogether. If you have something that shows both rear tires and the vehicle, than that would be great, else no worries.

Also, I believe they are non-rft? and 11" in width (rear tires)?

Thanks

ZheHbKa 02-24-2011 10:58 AM

yeah they are non rft and yes.
i dont have fender flares so they stick out a little, i dont have pics right now ill try to post later on

TorontoKhan 02-24-2011 11:01 AM

Thank you sir, appreciated!

ShantF1 02-24-2011 01:12 PM

I will. They are way better than the dunlops it originally came with.

MRV99 02-24-2011 02:19 PM

the 315's on the back make the X look like a tank from behind. Actually the only way people knew I got the wife a new 11 was the 20" are sooo much wider than the 19's and is very noticeable.

TorontoKhan 02-24-2011 11:32 PM

That's the entire point to get the 315's beastly looking DWS. The big paw print makes all the difference, but can't jeopardize the ride and handling of the vehicle either.

I had been on a search for one for my White X5 (E70) and I couldn't find any satisfactory reviews until this one (if you guys know any other, please refer me to them as well). There are hardly people out there who have written/posted pix of their 315's on X5, so it's very hard to make the decision on which ones to get.

These are on top of my list right now after Zhehbka's excellent write up and satisfaction along with a couple of other respected members. Tho kind of very expensive in Toronto, almost about $400 a piece.

quackbury 02-25-2011 02:09 AM

Nice post - thank you!

You make it sound like you've had the Dunlops on since new - mind if I ask how many miles on your 2007 and how many sets of Dunlops you've been through? I have them on my 2011, and the only thing I "like" about them (too strong a word) is the no cost road hazard warranty.

ShantF1 02-25-2011 01:34 PM

The first thing I will do is change the dunlops to bridgestone. They are better comfort wise and performance wise. As my dunlops were wearing out, everytime I accelerated the traction control would come on and cut the power thinking that I was loosing grip.....I took it to the dealer several times and the QC even drove it, and experienced the problem. They told me it was because of the tires. I didn't believe them at first. But then I changed the tires and everything went back to normal. 2009 xdrive48i sport pack and adaptive drive.

cybervinn 02-25-2011 11:37 PM

Just got my Bridgestones removed and Continentals installed and wow; comfort level increase but still feel planted!

TorontoKhan 02-26-2011 12:07 AM

Hey cybervinn, congrats man, any other details about "planted" feeling and anything else worth mentioning about the wheels?

Also, is the tire monitor light on, on your instrument panel? I was told by my dealer if I change the tires, the Flat Tire monitoring light will stay on.

Thanks! They still feel "planted" because I thought switching to all-seasons I would lose "grippiness" with the road and with the increase cushioning cause the ride to feel "mushy" and less sporty. Neither was the case. Because I've only had my X5M for a short time (only 300 miles on my stock wheels) I have to state that I didn't really push my vehicle with the Bridgestones (still haven't passed my break-in period). This is not to say the Bridgestones weren't good, I probably wouldn't notice the firmness on nice smooth roads. I actually expected a firmer ride with those tires, but living here in NY where there are lots of pot holes it starts to gnaw on you due to the frequency. I got the all-seasons earlier than I wanted to for fear of more snow hitting here in the North East. I wouldve love to have waited till after my break-in period to really put the Bridgestones to the test.

As for the Low Tire Pressure indicator light being on, I think my installer reset it for me. Once you reset it, the computer recalibrates. You can reset it yourself via the iDrive controls, under Vehicle Information if I remember correctly so its not a problem.

TorontoKhan 02-26-2011 01:25 AM

Excellent. I'd be very much interested to hear more about these Conti DWS tires from you in a week or so; about feeling, handling, performance on tight turns, speeding etc...

What size did you get if I may ask? Any pictures?

cybervinn 02-26-2011 01:39 AM

I got the stock sizes for my vehicle which are the 275/40/20 fronts and 315/35/20 rears. I just got my car back from the installer this evening so it was too dark for any good picture taking. I had planned on taking some pics any way because I got some mudflaps installed too. There are not too many pics out there with a good view of the X5 with flaps installed so I wanted to post some for those that might be interested in installing them. I'll try to take some pics tomorrow if the weather cooperates and post them.

cybervinn 02-26-2011 08:23 AM

Looks like they just sold-out of the Conti DWS tires at Treadepot.

TorontoKhan 02-27-2011 07:21 PM

Hey Cybervinn, any luck with the pics?

bigx5er 03-03-2011 12:13 AM

I installed the Conti DWS 19" on my 2011 35i two weeks ago. They are fantastic tires.

Great traction in a 17" snow storm and more importantly, not the jarring ride over bumps like the OEM Bridgestone runflats.

Overall ride is much improved. Can't say enough good things about them.

And I owe a thank you to the Discount Tire guy that hunted them down for me. They are very hard to find right now.

v.ru 03-03-2011 04:51 AM

Hey, I've got these on my E60 AWD as the winter setup and I love them.

The only gripe - if it can even be called that - the sidewalls tend to flex under hard, near-limit cornering. Personally, to me that is a big deterrent, but that's why I only use these for the winter/wet weather setup. Also, keep in mind: this flexing I'm talking about is at the very limit of handling of a very capable sport sedan platform (E60) - X5/X6 drivers may never reach that limit at all.

Anyway, I love these tires and recommend them to everyone, and I know quite a few people who also have these - never one complaint. Definitely a great tire. I've had mine since about a year ago and they are showing barely any signs of wear, which would be in line with their wear rating (which is very high).
