Definitely get yourself down to the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg.
They have entry level classes to advanced ///M Schools. I'd recommend the BMW 101 Experience for anyone. It is a little known pretend Performance Center Delivery. You and a guest get track time in a car (or X5) just like yours, the off-roads course in the X5, a factory tour, and a presentation of all the cars features. You also get a one night stay and a dinner at the hotel included. I got mine comp'd with the Z4 purchase from a dealer, but unfortunately not with the X5. However I've been there for several other sessions this year, including track time with M3's M6's, 135i's, and an X6M.

what else do you drive? while i would strongly suggest the Performance Center schools it is always helpful to be able to drive your own vehicles at speed.

I work for a living - I only have the one car.

My previous driving experience consists of Lexus (Lexii?) and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

(don't knock it - this was back when most people didn't have an SUV - lots of fun)

The Spartanburg delivery was offered (requested, actually) but when it came down to it, it pushed the delivery date way back and it turned out not to be convenient.

A look at their schedule shows they're pretty well full, but from what I hear (and thank you) it's worth the time and effort.

Looks like there are a few options.. The "Car Control School" (even if it's two days) might be interesting, but I think I have a decent grasp of that. I do know how to safely drive a car, just not at speed. (and you put that well - thank you)

i thought i knew how to drive once a few years ago. then i was nearly in the driver's side door of a nice E30 in turn 6 at VIR when my Instructor told me i was f***ing up.

sure do the M school. it's your money.

if you learn anything it will be well worth the expense.

one day i will go to M school. too bad i'm just a college student with all my money going to keeping my gas tank full! and of course i did end up spending $900 on books for one semester. makes me wonder what that $55,000 of tuition gets me

I can't really advise you which one to take (its your money). The price does seem relative to the time behind the wheel. I do know you'll get the most speed and "racing" feel with the ///M School. But you'll sure want to own an M3 after taking it.

I believe the car control refers to learning emergency braking, slaloom, emergency maneuvers, and autocrossing. It really does show just how good handling any BMW is.
