Leather Treatment

Looking for advice on what product to use to treat the interior leather. Thanks.

If you have very dry leather that is in need of care I would recommend leatherique. Another product that I have only heard good things about but haven't used is leather masters trio. Phil sells it at detailers domain.

Leatherique works very well and plumps up the leather to brand new condition.

roadkillrob 10-16-2010 07:51 PM

Leatherique is definitely good if you are trying to bring back really dry rough leather. For the regular cleaning and conditioning, I really like the Zaino stuff, easy to use, been using it on my e93 for 3 years and the seats look like brand new still - their cleaner works wonders and will get anything off leather, even pen. The conditioner makes your car smell like brand new leather!

Lexol

:iagree: get both the cleaner and the conditioner. Works great on all leather with out the greasy "armorall" feel.

ring007 10-16-2010 09:49 PM

I've used Lexol (twice per year in spring and fall) in all my cars in the past 15 years, and all of them looked like new to the day I sold them.

ard 10-16-2010 11:47 PM

Lexol

Is that +4?

MRV99 10-17-2010 12:01 AM

I have been using lexol for 20 years on my leather goods. When every old shoe guy tells me to lexol my shoes when I get them repaired, I have a good feeling about recommending it to others.

BGM 10-17-2010 02:31 AM

Leatherique.

JCL 10-17-2010 02:40 AM

Lexol cleaner and conditioner, two separate products.

I have also used Connolly Hide Food for conditioning. Good stuff.

roadkillrob 10-17-2010 08:52 AM

I used Lexol for years, if your using it, try Zaino, you will never go back!

Also, get a little leather brush, from swisswax or even just a little shoe leather brush, works wonders with the cleaner getting the dirt out of the grain and seems.

I like Zaino. Gives it a nice feel.

Quicksilver 10-19-2010 12:11 AM

People keep telling me my ride still smells like new leather. Must be the Lexol?:dunno:

I'm a zaino polish nut...Z2, Z5, etc, etc

but I believe the rest of their products (leather, rubber products, calybar, etc) are simply repackaged OEM products. Their clay is IDENTICAL to the mothers clay....the rubber/plastic is identical to STP rubber and vinyl.

Just saying....

:iagree: ...me too on the ZNut/usage deal. But, I've used their Leather stuff on both the X and Vette, and I think Lexol is better.

Has anyone used the Wolfgang leather care or conditioner? Any feedback on that? I've used their sealant/wax for the exterior. I prefer it to Klasse which is harder to apply and remove.

stockguru 10-20-2010 11:07 AM

I guess no one uses the OEM cleaner and care kit? I bought it and have used it sparingly. Seems to do the job.

Yeah, its called lexol! :)

(OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer...which means the entity that makes the cleaner. I think you meant "OE" or original BMW cleaner.)

jcmd2003 10-20-2010 05:59 PM

I have started using 1z Einszett products since buying the new X5. They have a combined leather cleaner/conditioner. Prior to that I had used Zymol and Lexol products. For new leather I would give the Einszett a slight edge; it seems to leave just as nice a finish on the leather as the other products and the single application step is more convenient. My wife prefers it to the Lexol on her 08 Acura MDX. We tend to keep our seats fairly clean/well maintained, so I don't know how it would fare on heavily soiled leather compared to the separate cleaner/conditioners.

:iagree:

I just used it last night on my leather sofa. I have used it on the X before and it seems fine but no leather aroma.

jago 10-21-2010 10:42 AM

i was introduced to lexol by my first BMW dealer about 20 years ago,
and never really looked back. its the goods for preserving leather in
currently good condition. as far as rehabbing old stuff not sure whats best.

gerrypd 10-21-2010 12:24 PM

Lexol all the way!!!

BGM 10-21-2010 05:17 PM

I don't buy any wax, car wash soap, microfiber towels or leather cleaner if it's sold at a Autozone, etc. For the price we pay on these cars I like to spend a little more and find that the quality is better. My $.02.

Thanks for all the replys.

If I choose to use a product that is a two part process (cleaner, then conditioner) should I use the cleaner even on new leather? Just got mine last Saturday and I am thinking just using the conditioner only for first time. Thanks.

I always use the cleaner, because the goal is to get small particles of dirt out and thus make the leather last longer.

Over time, the leather dries out, and conditioner restores and replaces the necessary oils that keep the leather supple. You don't need conditioner every time; over use of it isn't good either.

So I would use the cleaner, but I wouldn't put conditioner on new leather, it isn't required.

I used Leatherique (both cleaner and conditioner) every 3 months for 9 years on my '01 e53 and did it from day when it was new. Never damaged it or did anything negative. You can really see how much dirt accumulates just over a 3 month time period--and I am single (with a dog) so not many passengers.
