Google Maps sending maps to the x5
Hi Guys,
Without sounding like a complete noob I tend to see a lot of threads going around the X5 forums about sending your maps to your car from google maps. Can anyone enlighten me about this?? Is this a service that you have to pay for? How does it work? Is this feature only available in the US (i'm in Aus)? |
BMW Assist
If you have access to BMW assist (button under flap in overhead console), you should be able to set this up.
Need to set-up your email address with the BMW Assist operator after pushing that button. The go to Google Maps, find what you want directions to and click on "More" on the pop-up box on the map. Select "Car" and the select BMW, enter your e-mail address you set up with BMW. If it works, you will get "Successful". Check you owners manual on how to retrieve. On our 2011, it is under BMW Assist. |
ah ok sounds interesting, thanks for the info i'll have a look to see if i have that feature

Edited to say that I was using Chrome and when I switched to IE and an older version of Google maps I found the function as described here. |

What a lot of people don't know is that you can send a location to the vehicle directly through the my BMW remote app on your smart phone. You still have to activate the service with BMW assist but it's very easy to look up an address with the mapping feature on the app and then send it directly to the car.

My wife is currently driving out of state. I sent an address to her and as I showed her she got to Messages (2012 X5) but when she clicks on the address she says it does not activate the navigation.
I only tested this once about a week ago and I don't remember what step she is missing and she is not good with using the knob. Any quick help about what she might do to activate the address (her destination for tonight) in the nav? Edited to say I also tried to use the BMW remote app to resend the address but the app tells me "ignition is on. location not displayed for privacy reasons" when I tried to use "vehicle position". |
To my surprise, my wife finally got the nav engaged so well see how the BMW maps do in finding a remote location in MO.
In the meantime, I cannot find a way to get the BMW remote app to let me access the vehicle location so I can send an address through the app. I can see where my wife is using FindMyPhone but I would like to use the Remote app in the future when sending an address to my 2012 X5. |
Try sending it from a PC using Google maps. I don't believe the app will let you locate the vehicle or send anything to it while the ignition is on.

Having tried this feature for the first time moments ago, I was not aware of this limitation when using the app rather than my pc. So she would not be able to call BMW Assist and get them to release the data to me since I am logged in with my BMW Assist id and password? |

So when I try to send an address from the app it tells me to that it does not know the vehicle location and I just assumed this would work much like using classic Google maps. Edited to say that when I finally changed from map view to list, I saw how to send the address to the vehicle. Oh well, sorry for the false alarms. I should have learned more about these features before letting my wife get on the road. |
I've sent addresses from Spain to my vehicle parked at Miami Airport, using the BMW Remote app, but the vehicle finder doesn't work at that distance.
I've never tried to send addresses to a vehicle in motion. |
Google took away that feature a month ago. I use that feature quite often and it is the best so far. Just sad to loose it.
|
I am now using "Send to Car" app on my Samsung S4.

Looks like they brought it back. Yeah!!!!!!

Just remember, if your in a parking garage and the cell signal isn't that great you may get a false location report, happened to me just the other week, learned I'm older than I thought at the same time.. :bustingup Harry |
Although the BMW remote app is a good way to send an address to the BMW nav, I was disappointed yesterday when neither the new or classic version of Google Maps could send a message to my X5.
|
I had the same problem similar to GPSnV1 trying to send an address to my BMW. I've found out that you have signed in to your google account first in order to send it. Try that and let me know the result?
Cheers mate. |

I think I was signed in when using classic Google maps because my X5 email showed up when selecting send. However, I would always get an error message saying it was not possible to send the address and it sent me to a help file that did not resolve my issue. |
I haven't had a single hiccup ever since I switched from my comcast email account to a gmail and had BMW Assist change it in their system as well. I was one among all those people with POP3 email problems. Sorry to hear this feature doesn't work for you. For me it is one of the best feature that I used often.
Cheers mate |
I think you just told me something I did not know. I am using a POP 3 email with BMW Assist.
I guess I need to switch BMW Assist to my gmail account as well if that would solve the problem. The BMW Remote app works but takes me much longer than using Google maps. |
Doesn't hurt to try a Gmail account to rule out the problems you've been having. It took me almost a week with BMW Assist to figure out my problem. Turns out it was POP 3 email was the culprit.
Here is what I would do to try this out. Call BMW Assist and have them switch to your Gmail account. Once this is done, wait fifteen minutes for their system to switch over. Sometimes, you might have to wait up to half an hour for everything to switch over. Then use google maps from your android, iphone, laptop or even desktop and try it out. Cheers mate. |
24 hours after resetting my email, I cannot get this to work.
I will have to call BMW Assist this week and see if something simple is being missed. |
Well, today BMW Genius then BMW Assist tells me that my email was not changed as I had been told by BMW Assist on Saturday.
I am told that this will now take 1 to 2 weeks and they will call me once it has gone through the system. This process is slightly curious because the BMW Remote app seemed to recognize the new email (gmail) that was supposed to have been processed on Sat in 2 to 4 hours. |
