Brake noise (squeak) at very low speed

Only 2500 miles on the car, and the brakes squeak when rolling almost to a stop. The dealer told me that this was because of the metal used in BMW brakes. I'm not buying it.

Suggestions???

Thanks.

Pretty common on the E70.

same earlier on when new... just a few hard stops will get rid of it... if it recurs, same thing... haven't had it happen in a long while now.

thanks. I'll give that a try.

It's a metallic noise isn't it? It comes and goes.

Washing the x5 wheels very well make any difference?

Never had squeal on my x but commonly on my 335i and BoxsterS in past but usually meant too much brake dust build up and time to hose off.....

I just remembered something. Some time ago I complained this problem to the dealer and they said they'd put lubrication on the brakes or something. The noise got very much reduced. But after washing the car and wheels, the noise was present again.

The lubricant they would have used is a high temperature grease which is applied to the ears of the pads, where they touch the caliper. By insulating the caliper the pad is isolated, and when it vibrates there is no path for the noise to be transmitted (the vibration is what you hear as noise)

If they did it quickly, they may have just applied it from the outside with the pads installed. That fits with it washing off, which it shouldn't. You may want to try taking the calipers off and applying it properly.

^Thanks for chiming in JCL. That must be what they did. It works pretty well. The OP may want to do that to the vehicle.

I have tried the hard stops. It goes away momentarily and then comes back. Very frustrating. I will bring it in to the dealer and see what they can do. Thanks for all of the suggestions.
