This is what BMW is trying to get customers to do (custom order cars), and then deliver them quickly.

BMW's Push for Made-to-Order Cars

Forbes Magazine dated September 27, 2010 BMW can build a car exactly the way you want it, and fast. Now it has to convince Americans that's how they want to buy them.

Talks specifically about X5's too...

Oh please.

The OP got lucky that his dealer had a open slot almost ready for production that they were able to convert to his specifics... nothing to to with a BMW initiative.

We've seen hundreds of posts detail 'order/wait/status/production/delivery'.....

"prep center" is a building in Spartanburg. Your car was not 'transported' anywhere, it is just that the website was designed to include transport from germany to the US prep center. It is in spartanburg waiting for a train. It will be 10-14 days to get to you. First to VPC in Oxnard, CA...then 2-3 days to get on a truck to norcal

tlouie 11-29-2010 05:46 AM

yeah took the car two weeks to get from "prep center" to dealer

still the car came one month earlier than originally promised....whatever happend, i was happy !

roadkillrob 11-29-2010 10:04 AM

Prep Center is beside the factory, so it gets there the same day it finishes, then takes up to a week to get on transport and then 10 days to west coast typically. If you get lucky it will get on the train quickly and you will have it in the next 2 weeks!
