Navigation Map won't load and gas gauge issues?

For whatever reason the navigation map in my X5 either hesitates to load when I first start the car or doesn't load and says the system can't read the DVD. Anyone else have a similar problem or is this typical of the idrive system?

Also, when I fill my car with gas, the gauge only goes to the line before the full line. If I keep pumping after the automatic cut off on the nozzle sometimes I can get it close to full, but I don't like the idea of continuing to pump well after the nozzle cuts me off. It isn't just one particular gas station as it happens every time I fill the car.

I thought I would check in here before I have to take the morning off of work and bring it in to the dealer.

For the fuel gauge issue, try a tankful with Techron concentrate.

DVD player is going bad. Happened to mine. Replaced under warranty about 9 months ago.

Thanks for the responses.

I don't have a Chevron dealer anywhere near me.

Sounds like a trip to the dealer is in order. Anyone else have this problem with the DVD player?

If you do have CCC navigation system (DVD based) most probably your DVD reader is almost dead. We used to see few vechiles with similar problem.
But first of all I would suggest you to remove your DVD with maps and make sure it is not scratched and clean. If this is the case buy CD Cleaning Disc and clean your DVD drive. If this not help... most probably your CCC navigation DVD drive is dead. Maybe it is time to switch to CIC navigation system instead ?

Thanks, I checked the DVD and it looked fine. I have never removed it from the drive beside that so I can't imagine how all of a sudden it could get scratched or dirty.

This is common issue for all CCC nav system. If your DVD is fine than most probably - trip to the dealer. Does your vehicle still under the warranty ? If not, do not spend money for the new CCC DVD system, better get CIC. This is just my 5 cents.

It is a 2009, so yes it is under warranty. I have an appointment set at the dealer for Monday. Thanks for the help!

Known issue with DVD. There are threads on this subject. I had mine replaced after it did the same thing yours is doing. 1 yr later, no problems.

Any ideas on the gas gauge?

MRV99 11-12-2010 03:55 AM

"Hello, I would like to schedule my car to be brought in for some issue I have been having"..... Take it in your under warranty and the gas gauge should not do that, could be the filter/sensor/pump combo that bmw uses now instead of 3 separate parts. Use that warranty for all it is worth.... pre HD based BMW are super slow. My 07 x5 backup camera was useless because the car was sooooooo slow to boot and activate

Can you replace the DVD based system with a HD based one? I have an appointment on Monday and would like to request that if possible.

Your dealer will refuse it 100%
www.bmwretrofit.com - these guys did it for me (with my participation) and I am sure they can do it for you with no problems

The truck is leased so unless the dealer will do it for free as part of the replacement, I have no interest. Thanks for the help, I will update the thread after I hear back from the dealer.

i had the same issue with the gas gauge on my 2011 x5. When i filled up the car the gauge did not go all the way to full using 93 octane BP gasoline. any updates from the dealer? was it a mechanical/sensor issue? Also this is a newbie question but i was just interested: i do not have factory navigation on my car, but what would happen if i put a bmw navigation disc in my cd drive? would it read it at all? Just curious and probably a stupid question lol

jarodl 11-19-2010 06:20 PM

The dealer said there was a problem with the gas gauge sensor and was able to correct it (not sure how).

In terms of the navigation system, they said it had some kind of error code. It was reset; unfortunetely that didn't fix the problem. I explained the symptoms I was seeing when I dropped the truck off, and suggested a DVD drive replacement was warranted, but they must not have felt like paying for replacement parts. I guess I will have to make another trip down to the dealer.

This will be my 3rd trip to the dealer for electronics that have broke on this car (09 X5 4.8 with under 9k miles). This will probably be my last BMW until they make some improvements with their electrical systems.
