Side panel damaged from seat belt?

Side panels that are right next to the seat belt are getting very beat up...

Expensive part?

Any luck getting the dealer to replace under warranty?

mavic1010 11-10-2010 03:52 PM

Yeah..I hear ya...my driver's side is beat up. I asked under warranty...denied.

i think the part is like $70ish. from now on just use your hand to slow the speed of the buckle retracting and it won't ding the panel no more. annoying at first but after awhile you will get used to it and it becomes 2nd nature.

do you guys have the black liner? I dont' seem to see anything damaged on mine.

EDIT>> I see what you guys are talking about... it's more of a hard plastic at the level of the buckle. Never noticed it before so I guess it's not a big deal.

My 2011 5.0 has a fabric upper portion that is dent resistant

My 07 looked like a woodpecker went nuts on the lower hard plastic piece. On my 2011 I try to make a conscious effort to not just unplug/toss and instead unplug and guide it across to the door. Still have a few pecks from when I forget but much much better than before... wait, I have only had the car for 1 month........

Sorry - could you share exactly what you are referring to in a pic?

mjamesp13 12-05-2010 02:05 PM

I believe you are referring to the lower plastic portion which goes from floor right up to about the belt carrier? If so, I replaced both of mine and each was ~$35 from 1stbmwparts.com - easy to swap out. Simply pull from bottom where there are two plastic trim clips securing the piece, then slide entire piece down towards floor and in towards interior of cabin. Help this helps..

You have the part number ?

bren3085 12-06-2010 08:01 AM

my brother pointed out how munted my passenger side one was..i'm thinking of doing a DIY and covering it in a thick black fabric to prevent it from being dinged..

PN 51436955359 but that is for Gray color. PN will vary based on color.

Is this an OEM part? If so, what's the point of replacing them since it will get dinged all over again.

You can start being more careful and not ding the new part. Mine is a year old with 20K on it and has zero seat belt dings. Prior to getting my X5 I'd read about the dinging problem, so I've been careful not the let the buckle fly when I unbuckle.

Ok, OK, I see the logic, but what do I do with my passenger?:banghead:

My is replaced under warranty, I think it is a design flaw.

wow. was it replaced with the same OEM plastic piece? or is there something better? Thanks. BTW, how hard was it to convince BMW to cover under warranty?

They replaced the same bmw part. I talked to the service manager and convinced him that it is a design flaw. All you need to do is be nice and respectful. But they only replaced the driver side for me.

mjamesp13 12-07-2010 09:29 PM

Penguin you are right; careful with the belt. I did not create the initial damage, I purchased a CPO and previous owner was not careful. Of course I replaced both sides and numerous other trim pieces because I am anal..
