My tail LED lights went out as well, just over 50k and this post is very discouraging. I thought it would be a simple bulb replacement. I am going to call my dealer to find out how much. I have 100k warranty by 3rd party and 100k extended maintenance, I wonder if any of this will cover it...Will update.

yes you have to remove the whole houseing.
it is help by thick silicone tape (glued) you have to carefully cut it.
Make sure you buy a new roll before doing this, that tape is not reusable.

You can remove the fog light bulb and place it in the new housing

I have Fidelity Platinum coverage bought from local BMW dealer and they said it is eligible for coverage, to my surprise, after hearing/reading so much of bad review about Fidelity. Service appt about two weeks away, will see if it actually covers it. Still cannot believe this requires whole part replacement, for anyone without warranty will cost him probably $300+ for parts and labor, and from what I gather, it can fail around 50k more or less.

thats good!
i changed it out of warranty and with OEM part from getbmwpart.com it only cost me around a $100, of course labor is self

Could you tell us what parts were ordered to replace on your own? And how long it took you to replace it?

In case they say it isn't covered while my car is there, I might have to end up getting it done myself...for whatever is worth, it does not trigger "warning" on idrive, that's nice cause I would hate to see the message everytime I get in the car. If BMW thought of not triggering the warning message, perhaps they could've gone a bit further and made it "bult replacement" instead of whole assembly part...

Got replaced both of this lights by my bmw dealrer / service here in Germany. Dindn't have to pay anything for this. They said it's a known problem, water gets in the lights. They replaced it within 2,5 hours.

And i didn't have any warnings in the display. One of the lights was not working.

I just got mine replaced by local BMW dealer under Fidelity warranty, about $270ish (parts & labor) but no cost to me.

if you go on getbmwparts com, you can browse by part and find it there, part i believe is 160 and installation is relatively easy.
