Ok,

Traded in my X6 50i for 011 X5 35d...Love the big V8, but for a # of reasons (including financial) I have opted to move from the 6'er to the 5'er...

So diesel guys (and gals) -- anyone want to add more experience sharing on top of some of the great threads already out there on the diesel? ;)

Congrats. Be careful, especially with bad weather...Sand Beige has light beige carpets and light beige door panels. Consider the Oyster. You get the light seats with black contrasting and the carpets and high use areas are also black. I've seen what Sand Beige looks like after a few months.....Oy!!

It's been a week now since I traded my 2010 750 for the 2011 35d. I miss some of the interior materials the 7 Series had & exterior LED lights, but the 35d X5 is awesome. It feels (and is) very quick and strong! Also, my insurance went down $800/year and the mpg is more than double in the 35d!

Ways a personal choice, so I wouldn't let anyone steer you otherwise.

Asmfar as the diesel, I have 18,000 milesmin 13 months. 24 mpg with 70% city driving in Boston. I do get 27 - 28 on highway at 72 Mph. Winter motions herenhave anti gel additives that lower economy.

DEF has not been a problem..except for an initial fill issue that several of us posted last winter.

I've been in zero degree temps in a Maine blizzard, with no start issues, and the X5 handles great in really nasty snow conditions.

No warranty problems, no issue finding diesel stations, no issues with run flats, didn't buy tire insurance. I did have the clear bra installed on the hood, mirrors, etc (non BMW) and it Is a good investment. My windshield is fairly pitted from a year on sanded roads, and I can only imagine what the front paint job wouldmlook like.

As DieselGuy said...Colour is a personal choice, and I was not pushing a colour agenda. It's just I've seen Sand Beige (and had it ONE time, and ONE time only). The black mats will help, but the door sills and many other areas are very light sand beige...and no mats can help there.

But if you like Sand beige, you like Sand Beige! :)

It will look beautiful with Vermillion Red and the light wood is pretty awesome!!

If you like your 35d even only half as much as I like mine....you will be in heaven!! :)

My '11 35d is one of the most amazing BMWs I have ever owned. I do not miss the V8 at all! This suv pulls and pushes like a freight train. I go up super steep hills, and it just goes up the hill, quickly, at around 1800/2000 rpms and does not even need to downshift. Transmission and engine are amazing!

MPG is such a treat. With my 2008 X5 4.8i, the mpg was truly miserable. I got usually about 8/10 mpg in the city. With my 2010 750, I got around 13/14 mpg. With the 35d, I am getting 18/20 mpg with city traffic! Highway is yielding in the high 20's/per gallon. And my engine does not even have 200 miles on it yet. I can only imagine how great it will be, once the engine is broken in!!

Again, Congrats. I'm really excited for you. Do not even think twice about losing your 50i V8. My last 3 cars were a 2010 750i and 2 Mercedes ML63s (510hp V8s). One day with this 35d, and V8s and miserable gas mileage are now just a past, painful memory. You're gonna love it!!!!

I've had my X5 35d for exactly one month today and will be writing up a report to post in a while. I'm at just over 1000 miles and 1/4 the way through the third tank of diesel, averaging 21+ MPG at 30 MPG average in mostly mixed commuting.

I enjoy the balance of the engine and transmission in the 35d, and I've learned how to use the DS and M modes if I really feel the need to get moving quickly. The only thing I'd like to see improved is the initial off-the-line acceleration. It's fine in most traffic, but it doesn't "leap" off the line like a gas engine can. From 5 or so MPH it starts to go like a freight train, and will often overtake cars that were quicker off the line.

I considered a 35i and liked the way that they felt on test drives, but the 35d had multiple advantages and incentives in its favor. The 50i was never really a consideration as the one that I test drove didn't feel significantly faster than the 35i in normal daily driving situations, and I knew that it would be awful in the economy department. I'm not really a "greenie" (despite living and working near the People's Republic of Boulder), but I don't mind not having to fill up so often, and I can wave the alternative fuel/clean emissions/etc. flag to shut the greenies up. ;)

This is my first diesel..Part of my draw to it was the dealer wanting to deal on this model right now and I also want to tow a 26' boat in the summer...

SA is telling me it's in production and I could have it as soon as 2-3 weeks!!

Two weeks great....three weeks and you lose the $1800 diesel credit

No, no, no!! You tell them that since you ordered the car, you want to be grandfathered for the $1800...it's not you fault or worry that the car will take one week longer than expected. Either BMWNA or the dealership is going to have to pay you then!

Yes, it is not a "BMW credit" but rather a federal law- hence not within BMWs control

Yes, they are not making enough on the deal to give him $1800 to make it right.

I am sure they would graciously allow him to decline delivery and they will sell it to a walk-in

That sucks! I am lucky then I got to take advantage of the $1800 credit and $2500 Holiday cash and a loyal customer discount.

I am hoping sale in 010 and (potentially in service in 011) means minimally, a tax credit in 011..

We'll see...There is not a hell of a lot I can do right now but wait and hope :(

Right on all accounts....There ain't a lot of diesels on lots these days either...Especially Vermillion Red :cool:

I believe the 1800 tax credit has been phased out for 2011. As long as you can sign the paperwork in 2010, you should be able to get it. Also, they have ramped up production on 'sold' vehicles, but I believe the factory is closed the week after Christmas, so a January delivery mat be in the cards. You did get the eco and holiday credits, right?
PS I think the vermillion red is awesome! I ordered white.

I was going to get the 20's but I'm tired of swapping out shoes twice a year and went with the 19 All Seasons. I'm getting lazy in my old age :rolleyes:

Yes, eco and holiday credits have been applied on top of a good price on the vehicle to begin with. I have a great SA that I've known for many years. He helped put this rather difficult deal together..

I think we will have a very good vehicle on our hands! I can not wait until Wednesday for mine! Did you get a production number yet? As soon as I got mine I was able to follow its' progress on the bmw website.

Whenever I hear that, my radar goes up. I usually see "loyal bmw customers" paying more that other customers!

2011 there is no credit, just to confirm.

To those saying "as long as the 'paperwork' is done in 2010" you will be OK....

this is the IRS- so as with any fraudulent transaction you declare on your taxes you do so at your own risk. You need to take possession of the car in 2010. If you can get the dealer to back date it and have it show a 2010 delivery, give it a shot. But recognize the final arbiter isn't BMW, but is the IRS.

I'm sure you're going to LOVE your X5 35d. My wife and I have noticed the funniest "problem" with ours...it completely masks the true speed your traveling at. I'm not talking "feels like 50 when you're going 60", more like "whoops, was I really doing 95?"

After she found herself guilty as well, she turned to me and said "Okay, it's either going to be a massive speeding ticket, forcing ourselves to always use speed control, or a radar detector..." Guess which way we're leaning?!?

Funny you say this. In my 2010 750i, I never really went over the speed limit much. In my 35d, it is SO hard to do the posted speed. For me, it is one of those, I'm doing 50 in a 35?

Yeah, I had this experience as well....I actually set the iDrive to alarm when I hit 75. Annoying at times, but it is really helpful (for me). Lotsa CHP sitting on the 85 and 280 with Lidar, so I figured a V1 wouldn't be much help.....

Well - production was finished before the new year and I still don't have it delivered...

How many "X's" are sitting and waiting to get on trucks in Carolina right now? :dunno:

When I am on long trips driving interstate, I set the alarm about 5 mph over the speed limit. It seems to go off every 10-15 minutes and my lady friend says "it's singing you song again..." Eventually I give-up and use the cruise control...
