rain, snow, dirt on cameras & rear window
 

Hey all,

I'm just curious how you all deal with the accumulation of dirt that seems to build up immediately when driving in any weather condition that isn't pure sunshine.

If there is any moisture on the road, it is kicked up onto the rear window and all the top view cameras. At high way speed in rainy conditions, the visibility out of the rear window is poor at best.

Is it the winter tires? Would the aero kit help sort out the spray pattern? or has a solution been found with installing mud flaps?

i wait until i can't see out of the windshield anymore and then i wash the vehicle. :) looking out the back windows is for people that drive slow.

I think we've gotten 20-30cm of snow over the last 2-3 days. It's been a gongshow throughout town but my X5d with Toyo G02+ Tires are keeping me pretty happy. The mirrors get covered in crud pretty fast as you may imagine, I just do a quick walk around and wipe the lenses with my finger.

Also for the rear window.... don't you have a rear wiper? No issues here...

During a week of messy roads over Christmas, I cleaned the rear camera 3 times. It was usable dirty but not a good clear picture. I used my finger but a soft rag would have been better.

Yeah, I have the rear wiper running at all times, but it still isn't fast enough to deal with the accumulation of rain or slush.
Same as you all, I use my finger or napkin to wipe off the cameras all the time.
Mainly, I was wondering if there was a solution that didn't require cleaning them off so frequently. I'm a little surprised that the vehicle puts the spray onto the window, as opposed to leaving it behind.

The mud flaps help a little, but it still gets that way after some driving.

If you have it running continuously, that is surprising. Is the wiper blade in good contion? If you have it running on intermittent mode, just shorten up the delay interval to make it continuous.

Mud flaps do help somewhat, but you are dealing with a low pressure area behind a large bluff object, you are always going to get the most dirt and spray there, and it will be worse the faster you go.

Anyone put Rain X on the camera? I just thought of that now and might try it out.

Good luck on that. You're also dealing with dirt and salt and not just rain.

The rear windshield isn't really a problem since there is a washer and wiper there to clean it. It bothers me also, though, that the cameras dirty so fast and was thinking that it would be a good idea to have tiny spray nozzles pointed at the cameras ( or at least the rear one ) so that they can be sprayed off similar to the way headlight washers are used. Anyone at BMW listening?
