LED license plate lights...Incredible

Installed them today, what a HUGE difference it makes to the rear of the LCI E70! Looks just like my 2010 750i! Our E70s should have came this way from the factory. Could not have been easier...about 3 mins total! NO errors, NO warning messages.

A special thanks to my friend Kloogy, who gave me the eBay info, where he bought them!!

Btw, $49 incl. shipping

cube4da99 01-13-2011 10:52 PM

Kloogy 01-13-2011 10:52 PM

Told ya !! It's literally night and day difference

Orientexpress 01-13-2011 11:28 PM

Say what bob smith!? 50$ for 2 leds?! you got raped dude, you know that right?

Mosman 01-14-2011 12:24 AM

I just received my X5 35i premium on Tuesday evening. Production date of 12/1. My X5 has LED license plate lights from the factory. I thought maybe I was nuts after seeing this thread, so I just went out and checked, and it is most definitely LED's, I can see them, and it's the same blue-ish white light that you get from the lights in the door handles on the outside.

BMW obviously made a production change recently.

Kloogy 01-14-2011 12:28 AM

Really ? I haven't seen any like that yet

Who is Bob Smith , and who paid $50 bucks for "two" LEDS ?

Jime60 01-14-2011 12:43 AM

I can confirm Mossman. Took delivery of a 35d on Wednesday and it has LEDs

Kloogy 01-14-2011 12:45 AM

Do you guys have Corona Rings up front ?

I don't have LED Corona rings. Of course the first thing I thought of when replying was that I wonder if those are coming too....and if they'll be easy to retrofit on other 2011 models...

Pics of the license plate coming shortly. Just have to upload them somewhere.

Kloogy 01-14-2011 12:56 AM

The lack of LED rings still pisses me off

It's okay, I paid $57. It's the WeissLicht LED License Plate from Bimmian.
Sorry, only pics from the mobile so far.

I can also confirm. My X5 35d was an early December production and it has the LED license plate lights.

SANguru 01-14-2011 01:49 AM

still don't get the infatuation with lights but as long as you enjoy them!

ukwildcat 01-14-2011 03:37 PM

Um.. OK. It looks like a just a bulb change for the new "factory" LED lights, or am I seeing that wrong?

That would be GOOD, of course..

License plate lights not being like headlights, it should be no problem.

You read my mind UK!

Jon SS 01-18-2011 01:29 PM

Do these licence plate lights improve the back up camera at night (2008 X5). I notice my Audi Q5 has a light right by the back up camera and at night the camera is great

Jime60 01-18-2011 02:35 PM

Can't tell you if it's improved from the 2010 version but it is 100% better than my '08 which was worthless at night. This LED version works fine in both daylight and at night.

Thanks, I have an 08 X5. So you installed these better licence plate lights for your 08 X5 and it improved the camera at night?

Did you get the Bimmian ones or the ones from the ebay link?

Jime60 01-18-2011 03:04 PM

Sorry Jon SS. Can't answer that. I solved the problem by buying a 2011.

Epacy 01-18-2011 06:18 PM

Still not introducing those LED license plate lights on the LCI is crap. The problem with the aftermarket ones are they're WAY too bright. The stock ones on my '08 M3 are LEDs and they have a nice tone to it, not overly blasting light out. Sounds like they finally came out with them for the X5, so it should be something we can buy from the parts department and retrofit.

CJP5 01-18-2011 11:30 PM

What am I missing... Why again exactly are we trying to shine a SPOTLIGHT on our plate?

I kinda like mine really dim... :D

IndyRon 01-18-2011 11:44 PM

I agree with the above two posts...I like the LED color but have no interest in making my plate easier to read for other drivers or law enforcement. I have a tinted cover on my plate already for this reason.

Kloogy 01-18-2011 11:52 PM

Do that in California and you'll get pulled over in no time.

ltglenn13 01-19-2011 11:20 AM

Just a question.. Has anyone tried replacing the x5 OEM license plate modules with the OEM LED modules from the current 3 series? I have a 2011 x5 and when I had a 2010 3 series as a loaner I looked at the LED modules and they have the same connector and are the same shape and size. Looks like an easy swap. Unfortunately I was not able to try it myself.

That's a great question! Maybe if someone has or knows a competent Parts Dept. employee....we can ask!

Kloogy 01-19-2011 02:50 PM

That would be intersting info. Someone needs to find out, or call for pricing. It might be worth a shot.

A quick search on RealOEM shows an LED license plate light for an E90 Sedan. ~$15 for the light assembly and $1-2 for some other part.

Anyone try a 3 series module yet?

Kloogy 01-24-2011 11:27 PM

No. I volunteer you to try !! :)

Please let us know if it works! Do you have a 328/335 coupe or sedan? Is is a 2011?

If it works, just let us know your exact car and year, so we can get the same exact part at the dealership. Thanks a lot!

Ninja 01-25-2011 02:59 AM

Unfortunately our is a euro-spec 320i 2010 LCI, but should have the same LED license plate lights as the US version. Will take pics and let you know how it goes!

Is there any possible reason, other that pure looks and vanity (ie "I have bright white plate lights, look at me") that you'd WANT to emphasize your registration/tag plates?!?!??

I mean isn't it better to simply have NOT plate lights? Or as dim as possible?

This seeming obsession with 'whiter and brighter' seems to over-ride any concept of form and function. Plate lights have absolutely nothing to do with any aspect of driving. It is a regulatory requirement and all brighter lights do is make it easier for law enforcement.

If I were to run across an overly bright and white plate light staring me in the face, I'd feel nothing but pity and annoyance.

Honestly yours,

A

In short, no... not other than vanity. I drive 2 cars, one with regular halogen headlamps and the E70 with the HID low beams. Most of the time, unless it's REALLY dark, the road is illuminated the same to me, but would I want an E70 with typical yellow halogens? It is definitely nicer looking with the HIDs. The rear lights are definitely nicer looking if it isn't a dim yellow halogen-esque color. You may think of it as just a look-at-me feature, but it actually feels good to have upgraded/modded things on the vehicle... makes it unique which is a big reason to mod. And this with little effort.

Another useless post by ard.

Who cares if there is another reason or if it is just for vanity. No one asked for an opinion or needs your criticism or judgement, just let these folks do whatever they want and let's stay on topic.

OP, let us know know if the swap works. I won't be doing this if it does work as I would prefer to go icognito, but I'm curious to see if it will work.

Go for it.

It's funny, there are some people one looks forward to annoying.

I submit that sometimes it is useful for people to know what others think of their mods- even if they don't ask.

They are not the same size. I tried swapping my 2008 M3 lights to the 2011 X5 and they don't fit.

What you're really saying is you have a very common E70 and wish to bring others down because you simply don't care about looks and neither should others.

You actually say a lot with your posts without actually saying it, but I guess you knew that.

Has to be a 2010 and newer 3 series. They are the ones with the new LED module on the license plates. 2008 would not fit.

Deutsch, ordered a set for my 07 e70 through ebay for $45. Let me install them and take some pics.

I think brighter, whiter lights add some measure of safety, even in the back. I'd say the proliferation of DRLs bears that out. Since I now have a one-month-old riding in my X5, I'll take as many bright lights as I can get. Maybe I'll go for the underbody purple fluorescents next.
