New Exhaust and Intake questions
I am pretty serious about getting a new exhaust for my 2008 X5 4.8. It really sounds decent enough stock, but I love the Meisterschaft sound, so that is probably the route I am heading down.
I have done some forum searches about this and one of my concerns is that when you have a more free flowing exhaust, you may need more air on the intake side. I have looked and have read that most "poo poo" the idea of a a larger or more free flowing intake beacuse of the usual suspects like more particulates etc. I agree 100% and would prefer to just have the new exhaust and leave it at that. I would also like to think that the fuel injection and electronic management would recognize some of teh differences as well, but what do I know? What has been the experience here with 4.8 users on exhaust and air flow. Is it remotely necessary? Has anybody done just the exhaust or both ends? I am pretty interested. I appreciate any replies. Thanks in advance. |
Go for a magnaflow it sounds better

I have seen a few E70's come through the shop with different exhausts, all sounded great. I don't think any one of them had aftermarket intakes or filters installed.
Welcome to the forum ShantF1 :wavey: but exhaust sound/tone is a personal preference just like paint color... I say let them eat cake. If they don't want cake let them eat pie! |
you shouldnt have to worry about it. having a free flow exhaust wont 'pull' more air or require more air on the intake side. air flow is limited to the restrictions in the system (i.e. air intake diameter, bends/turns in the system, bore of throttle body, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, etc.). by leaving the stock intake, your limits on how much air flows through is close to the same (the exhaust helps a bit but the gains are negligible without some sort of software tuning). you will be fine.
oh and i second the suggestion for the Magnaflow muffler. i have one on my project 3 series and it is the best sounding exhaust by far on any BMW i have heard. |
Just think of the new exhaust as sound modification. It won't change backpressure if it is well designed. If it isn't well designed you could lose some torque at certain engine speeds. In general, pick the one that sounds the best to you.
An aftermarket intake is similar in that there is no measurable restriction in the stock intake. Different aftermarket intakes can produce an intake roar, which some owners like. You aren't changing performance with either of these mods. Combined with forced induction, you would. Without forced induction, no real difference. |
Thanks for the replies. I did look at the Magnaflow and I just lean towards the Meisterschaft . Soujnd isnt as deep as teh magnaflow, but has a bit more of a "rasp" to it.
Again, it is preference, and everbody on Xoutpost is pretty cool about that. Thanks again ! |

back on topic, my experience with Magnaflow exhaust is that although they sound the best, they will drone at highway speeds. if you dont mind drone cool. if you have kids/a wife/ etc that wants to keep their low frequency hearing, i would probably go with the one you want. |
Where to buy the Meisterschaft exhaust? Im in the same boat and can't find anyplace in the States. Thanks.

Make sure to change the air filter to a k&n oem fit filter
