Regular maintenance at the dealer
 

I have a X5 4.8i with roughly 38k miles. I'm due for service and I'm still under warranty so I'm going to schedule service with the dealer. Other than the regular oil/filter change, what else is typically covered under this maintenance? Is there a checklist of things performed during this service interval?

What 'service' are you due for, and how do you know you are 'due'?

If it's oil & filter, you can pay the dlr, get it done at any legit joint, or DIY...
If you have other nits that need attention under warranty, then the dlr may be your choice,
if you are willing to pay the $150+ NY area oil change price, imo.

Its been about a year, and from what I was reading oil changes should be done every 15k miles or once a year (correct me if I'm wrong). I intend on DIY in the future, but my warranty is up in March so I'd like to have this done by the dealer, but wasn't sure what was covered.

The dealer should change the oil if it was changed a year ago.

What year is it and what is the service history?

There are schedules based on mileage and also low mileage oil changes. But then you have brake fluid every 2 years and coolant (not sure what BMW has on the X5 schedule)

Complain about 'streaky wipers' and they'll change them too under the free maintenance.

What does your manual say?

Now I understand your situ...yes, I would push for the 'annual oil service' for low mileage drivers, (though some dlrs pass over or abstain from this), and brake fluid if it hasn't been done in past 2 years, and anything else you can suggest/push for. Maybe have them check brake pad thickness, though your mileage is low, but the constant stop and go in NY may have taken its toll on pads. Lean on them gently, with your 'list'.

you are probably due for a Service I which should include cabin air filter replacement and what amounts to a vehicle inspection. but your idrive display should tell you what else might be due.

personally i change my oil every 7500 miles.

as your warranty is about finished you need to take it to the dealer with any issues you might have no matter how minor they seem today. if nothing else they will be documented should something major fail in the next year or two. BMW is known to repair things out of warranty on their dime, particularly if it has been documented as an issue during the warranty period. don't get me wrong, this isn't a guarantee of goodwill but it will help your cause potentially.

Appreciate the input everyone. I have a 2007 and I bought it used last September. Last oil change was done last March and the dash is indicating Service is due.

At a minimum I would like to get new wipers and oil & filter change. I would also like them to do brake fluid and brake pads if possible because I noticed my brakes were squeaking. Will the dealer cover this at no charge? I do not notice anything else wrong atm (fingers crossed), but does anyone recommend anything else I should have the dealer check out/replace for preventative maintenance?

I'm assuming they don't cover anything tire-related?? I seem to have a slight leak in my rear tire because I have to add air every so often.

The brakes are in interesting question... the 'maintenance plan' covers pad wear, but ONLY when the wear indicator has tripped or any one of the 8 pads or 4 rotors are below minimum. So when you come in and complain about anything with brakes, most lazy SAs will say "sorry, brakes not covered until they are worn down"...the truth is that if there is a new car warranty (ie 4/50) then it actually SHOULD cover 'brake operation and function'. Keep this in mind. If it is a minor squeal once in a while, maybe only when cold, then NBD...but if constant and very loud you should press for repairs.
