Diesel fuel
Diesel fuel has consistently been 30 cents per gallon higher than premium and more in my area all winter. Just wondering if this would have influenced your decision to buy the 35d. I know that mpg would more than make up for the cost compared to the 50i, but still... Hard to swallow paying .30 more per gallon than the gas-filling brethren.

In my area, about 30 miles outside of Los Angeles, Diesel has been anywhere from 5-15 cents a gallon less than premium gasoline. Now it is the same or a few cents more the premium gas. Our local Shell station told me the raise in all gas and diesel prices relates to the Egyptian crisis. Yeah right!! :-o

Yeah, it's a pisser....i love the torque of the diesel and would get it again w/o worry...that being said the higher price of fuel does make the gassers look good...

The best way to save fuel is to stop making short trips all over town. Instead plan and combine trips thru the week that way one can drive less and of course driving less means less fuel consumption.

the gas prices affect everyone. I just don't have to fill up as much with the diesel. I didn't buy it for gas prices, bought my 35d for what it is, a great, modern diesel!!!

some of us that drive BMWs also have work trucks that require diesel fuel. it smarts much worse when it hits the bottom line Quicksilver.

the 35i definately closed the mileage gap, that and current gas price delta's fudge the economics some...granted the $3800 rebate and previous $1800 gov credit helped...i like diesel's...the way they drive with all that torque just suit's my driving style....not overly happy with diesel being 30 cents more as i commute in a 7500lb diesel truck, but if we were all too worried about gas prices we wouldnt be driving any bmw....we'd get a car that can run 87 octane as it's the cheapest.

1. It isn't the $/gallon that matters.... it is DOLLARS PER MILE that impacts the wallet. Duh.
A diesel will surpass a smaller gasser in terms of performance, an gets 10% better mileage and costs 10% more to fill. (26 versus 23 highway...worse around town) Thats a wash. The larger motors may equal the diesel in driving performance (not stoplight racing) but cost more per mile- significantly (26 versus 20, way worse in the city.) 2. I fill the 996TT with 100 octane at 6/49 to 7.89 a gallon, depending on where I buy it. I do not buy cars to save money. If I did there are a great many other cars - NOT BMW X5s- that will save me far more money than the price difference of the FUEL over the car's lifetime..... |
I agree that the 35i closed the gap, but the torque in this truck is amazing...I think the HP and torque might be underrated like it is in some of the other BMW cars....even if it isn't, the diesel is the way to go in these. We did see diesel that was 40+ cents higher than premium in some states on our way home from Spartanburg..NC in particular had posted on pumps a 26 cents a gallon state tax. Guess each state and metro area will be different. In North Texas its about 10-15 cents more than premium...about 3.29 right now...bottom line is no...diesel is the way to go..if diesel is $5 a gallon then premium will likely be north of $4.....so what...drive it and enjoy it!!!

i spent New Years in West Palm Beach. diesel was $3.50 or more at most places on I95.

I tanked up about 2 weeks ago (still have more than 1/4 tank left) and I paid $3.55 I think. Premium was $3.53 pr $3.54. There are a few stations on our main drag (Ventura Blvd) and they are asking $4.60/gallon for diesel. They're nuts, robbers!!!

I'm sure prices effect big rig drivers also but the thread was about diesel fuel prices and the decision to buy the 35d. ;)

All figures based on the average economy from fueleconomy.gov and the low and high prices for Colorado from gasbuddy.com. I've been getting 22-23 on average, which jibes with the 22 MPG combined posted on fueleconomy.gov, and I'm assuming the 35i would get the 19 MPG combined in similar driving conditions. I used 10k to 13k miles per year based on my daily 40 mile round-trip commute plus other trips. What's funny is that the range of the X5 35d seems limited to me. My 2003 GMC Sierra HD diesel "only" gets 16 to 20 MPG, but it has a 34 gallon tank, so the range is typically 550 to 600 or so miles. I've never driven it on a trip without towing, but it might surpass 700 miles unladen. Not that I'd rather be in it over the X5, but not having to fill up often makes long trips nice! |
On just the comparison note; my Peugoet 504 diesel carried 40 gallons of fuel.
15 in the main tank, and another 25 in an additional tank right behind the rear seat. And yes I still had plenty of room in the trunk. One year the wife and kids, luggage and all took a trip and clocked a little over 1300 miles before I had to fill up again. |

Diesel Fuel
If my calculations are correct, and that's always a stretch, I'm getting 33% better mileage with my X5d vs. my 2001 X5 4.4, which at today's current gas/diesel prices means my diesel fuel is effectively 32% cheaper than the premium that the 4.4 uses even though in hard costs the diesel is $.10/gal more at the pump. I'll take that any day!:thumbup:

My daughter just got a BMW 3 series 2011 Coupe 330d, believe its the same diesel thats in the current 7 series, anyway it flyers. If you just imagine putting the diesel motor out af a X5 into a sedan will give you an idea how quick it is.
I drove the 7 series with this motor and turned the knob on the dash to sports and it lit the tyres up! and a 3 series no where as heavy as a 7 series! this thing is a torque monster. |
Hey, Diesel prices will drop once they go off the "winter blend" and back to the "summer blend" We've had a diesel in the family for over 20 years, and in CA it always goes higher in the winter months and then drops -- sometimes dramatically when they shift blends. Of course, it's supposed to hit 80 F here tomorrow...not sure why we need the winter blend! LOL

Prices also go up in the winter due to diesel and fuel oil being similar. Those damn northeasterners with their antiquated boilers.......
