First off, it's winter time, so crappy mileage to start with, but I'd also check your tire pressure.

If memory serves, I'm running 36/34 and getting a consistent 21.7 MPG combined.

Only other thing I forgot to mention was that I do use the cruise control ALL the time. Maybe this is what is helping my mileage.

35i sport, 4500 miles 85% HWY in NYC. i got about 19.5 combined with feather foot. about 17 with a heavier foot.

13mpg you sure you have the 35? you may get a 50 with 35 price :thumbup:

'600 miles'?! How many tanks could you have done the arith with, in those few miles? ;)

It's brand new, tight and I wouldn't consider worrying about it until you have a couple thousand on it...if you are still getting '13', then something is amiss.

The OBC readout will probably never be on the actual tank math, and imo, the current EPA 'test', with 'adjustments', provides for much higher potential 'hwy mpg' than anyone I know, including me, gets on newer cars, vs the older EPA standards.

As for driving like Grandma, it's your call; I'm not on the bench with the "drive it like you stole it" group, but some speed and rpm variation is good for a new car, imo.

My average in 16.4 with the 50i! I'd say in 7000 miles, its probably 60% highway so that helps but 800 miles was a hard driving mountain trip.

4500 miles on the wifes 35d...10%hwy/90% city (no winter fuel in AZ that i'm aware of)....she's not a smooth nor light pedal driver (think no throttle control)...still getting 20.x mpg per hand calc or 22.3 per computer....longest hwy trip was 90mi and i was doing 110mph on a lot of it (recouped on the downhill return).

Agree with previous...break her in then do the math....at least 3k miles....wouldnt red line, but wouldnt baby it either....normal driving with a few 3/4 throttle runs to keep her honest is my preference for break in.

good to know that some of us 35i's are getting better mpg! I just finished the breakin period. I'm hoping once the engine loosens up more, I will get better mpg. But I can't complain, I actually love going to the gas station to get junk food, red bulls, slim jims etc.. with my fill ups!

My 535i has regularly gone over 35 mpg (Imperial) on the highway. It is doing 29 mpg (Imperial) with strictly city driving. So, the 35i engine is very capable of better mileage. Just the small matter of all that weight to drag around with the X5.

OP: it will get a lot better after it is broken in, about 3000-5000 miles. Then, variances will be down to driving habits, as that is the biggest variable.

Hmm. I average about 16mpg on my 4.8i

On my 35D I get about 22mpg combined and I can still drive like you stole it :nanana:

I have a 2010 X5 35d with 24,900 miles on it. Pretty consistently get 20 to 21mpg with call it 50/50 city/highway. We (wife and I) are pretty heavy footed on the car and highway speeds, when open are well up in the double digit range.

The only thing I hate is that damn lag when punching the throttle either from a standstill or pulling out of lane to make a quick pass.
