There are new emission requirements from 2014, so if BMW has to spend money for homologation of new diesel engine in US, they will rather use 45d, then 40d. 45d will be used in new 6 series and X6 facelift. 45d is supposed to have 354hp and almost twice as much torque

I haven't seen anything that suggests that the 40d will be coming to North America this fall. BMW previously announced that they would not ever bring the 40d to North America, since it was not developed for urea injection. It is based on an entirely different engine than the 35d, the N57 instead of the M57.

BMW has now announced the 45d for this fall, at the Frankfurt show. Apparently it will go in the X5 and X6 first. It has a reported 354 hp, and 520 lb-ft of torque (not double, but pretty good none the less). I think that the 45d may be offered alongside another diesel concurrently, but that is just a guess.

Even if the new engines aren't out in the US this fall, delaying the tagging of the X5d as a 2012 model could avoid having to recertify the engine under current emissions rules.

I would suggest however that what makes sense in manufacturing and would be advantageous to BMW is to raise/re-configure their pricing this April along with the other X5 gas models, change the relatively minor exterior features of the 35D now and then make the big changes of the engine and/or transmission in October.

I am totally unqualified to make this claim but it makes sense to raise prices and do the minor exterior changes sense these vehicles are coming out of and along the same assembly line. Why would BMW continue to use 2 sets of parts for the exterior details on basically the same X5?

My thoughts worth what everyone paid for them....

I hope you are right, me and my salesman here in Germany was thinking/talking about that same scenario today. He is still waiting for pricing on 2012 X6s and the customer's cars are going into production in 3 weeks. I speculate that they will keep the 2011, but, change the price/packages to reflect 2012 pricing and then raise them again when they put the new engine/transmission in the fall. I really want the diesel, but, might reconsider and buy the 35i SA if they don't. I don't get the ECCO credit so I would save almost a $1000 on the 2012 pricing, plus would gain HUD and auto high beam.

So I guess I am just hoping this is the case.

I think if you wait that you'll still do alright in the end. BMW is staying silent to get rid of 2011's in the dealerships. When the official 2012's are a reality then BMW will try to unload the remaining 2011's first.

If you are prepared to wait up to 6 months I am sure you'll get either the latest greatest vehicle or a great deal on a 2011. You might even decide to buy a different model of BMW depending on the changes made on the 2012 models...
