Is there a way to update my 2011 X5 Nav maps to the new 2011 version without taking the car back to the dealership? Thanks

Yes.

Buy the 3 disk DVD set, then find someone to sell you the FSC activation code- do it yourself.

The FSC code is purchased from a BMW dealer or someone with access to the BMW system. Usually the parts guys order it and give it to the techs.

THe FSC code is a digital convolution of the map SWID number with your specific VIN. So the FSC code will only work to load THAT map on THAT car.

I purchased the map DVDs for just under $10. Yes, ten. I've been quoted 100 to 200 for the FSC code. Still working on it.

$400-450 seems to be what I've been hearing.

BMW has been sending out emails about the 2011 update, with $199 pricing, but when you actually inquire and they discover it is a CIC hard drive, they tell you to call the dealership.

Sorry, I forget.. Is CIC the older unit and CCC the newer unit?

CIC is the newer (computer in car perhaps?)

CCC is the older 'dedicated DVD drive in the dash' system.

OK, so why do they care if it's newer?

When we started the actual car delivery, they hadn't received the code yet so the dealer gave it to me and said I may need to enter it.

Shortly before we finished, however, they received the code and entered it for me.

So it's not like - at least at my dealer - they OBJECT to an owner doing it themselves..

Strange. Well, the roads change so often here I'll probably be looking at an update late this year.

The code you are talking about may be one of several codes...most notable is the FSC code to active Sirius service- this is supposed to be done at the dealer since it also starts the subscription.

The maps are preloaded and only need new codes for new maps.

I am guessing my source is not in the USA, and may or may not be a "bmw dealer". They may work at a dealer....
