Blonde move - when auto hold goes wrong

Bad day Saturday.

Picking up my daughter from dance class ..some lady stopped two metres in front of me in a no park lane and got out of her car (i.e. parked) ..I was a little pissed then thought ..what the heck ..I'll just be nice and wait for her to move ...

stuck car auto-hold on and waited ..turned around to sort out my son in the back seat and accidentally touched the accelerator without realising ..before I knew it the car lurched forward and hit her car in the rear end :(

She was fluffing around with her passenger door at the time and ended up bum down on the sidewalk ... her car got a small scratch in the rear - I broke my number plate protector(testament to the front absorbing bumpers on the X - they are awesome) ... but the momentum of her passenger door moving forward must have strained a hinge ..so her door would not close properly ..then she got all ANSI and hysterical ... a crowd of redneck construction guys started to hassle me (you get this sometimes when driving an X and they never will) so I gave her insurance details, asked her if she was ok, and left ... a bad day that will end up costing me close to $1000 (excess + police fine for 'careless' driving) ....

My lesson ... use auto-hold with caution.... you have to stay alert when this thing is on in autopark - next time I'll just use the P button instead if I have to stop for longer than a set of lights

All I can say is why? I never knew about this auto hold function, but would never use it even if I knew. Put it in park dude. Btw, there are rednecks downunder? Do they drive p/u trucks, drink budweiser and carry around shot guns?

Do they drive mid 70's to mid 80's Chevy p/u trucks, 4 foot lift kit... that they made from John Deere parts, that drink budweiser from cans and carry around shot guns, hang confererate flags from thier truck, rework thier exhaust so they have "stacks" like a rig. Beat thier wife for not getting enough beer at the store, and kick the dog on the way out the door to get more beer, and maybe yell something racist out of the window?

I fixed it for you! (can you tell I HATE, hill billys with a passion?)

Hey Jordo....... I'm sure you get your fair share of one fingered hellos coming your way with that Obama-Biden sticker on your E53.........

I use auto hold everyday - but only when in downtown with tons of traffic lights. Works great for me.

Sorry about what happen...i had a couple close calls early on but am very careful now when i use it.

Auto Hold is great when waiting at a red light or in stop-and-go traffic. :D It however is not a replacement for putting the transmission in park when you are not prepared to drive forward (and hit the brake if needed). This is not to say I don't feel bad for anzer. :( Anyway, I'm actually surprised that BMW was able to get this feature through the legal department and into the US market. It seems like something they would keep from the US due to "litigation concerns." I have heard that excuse all too often for various features that I would really like to see on a BMW.

Auto hold is an options, right? Saw a previous thread about it, checked my manual, and couldn't find anything about this. Don't see any buttons.
I have an 07. Am I missing something?
Thanks

I have an '11 35d and auto hold doesn't work on mine either. The 'brake on hill' (or whatever its called) does, but auto hold doesn't.

I had read about it a couple of weeks ago and tried it in my car and it didn't work. I thought I was just doing it wrong or something, but I tried it in an X6 the other day and it worked.

OP has a '10 35d. Anyone with an '11 35d get it to work? Do you have to have some option like the auto cruise or something?

AFAIK Auto Hold wasn't available on the 2007 E70. If I recall correctly, it became available in 2008. If equipped, the "Auto H" button would be just behind the parking brake switch. It must be activated per trip (is not persistent through engine stop).
