No radio, Cd changer but sat nav works....BMw tech cant help

Hello guys,
Please can anyone help, im just back from my BMW tech and he is clueless..?

the problem started after my battery was removed for charging, once it was re-intalled I had no power to my radio/cd changer, my sat nav works but with no sound?

I have checked the fuse in the glove box and the two in the boot...they seem fine, are there any others?? I have have a quick look in the radio module and that looks fine....nice and dry no water ingress

When I am driving the sat nav screen does blink briefly now and then......?

Can anyone please offer any advice as a car without a sound system is very dull......I have disconnected and re-conntected the battery terminals since then and no joy...

1. Year?
2. Miles?
3. Is "BMW Tech" a 'bmw trained, certified Technician at a BMW dealership"??
4. Warranty or not?
5. What battery was in it, what did you replace it with? (Battery part number and/or ratings)

Hey guys thanks for the reply! Sorry here are some more details...
It's a 2005 3.0d with 59k miles.

The battery was removed to be charged and tested, I had just purchased the car and was unaware the you have to lock X5s to prevent battery drain!

The BMW tech is trained and certified, he had the computer on it checking the parking sensors that day and no faults were showing for the radio? He seemed puzzled and said he had never encountered this problem before.

I have since then removed the battery terminals for 45mins to reset everything......no joy. I have removed all related fuses in the boot and glove box to see if they are the problem?
I don't want to go buy a new radio module until I can rule it out, but if there was a fault with that surely it would have shown as a fault on the BMW techs diagnostic tool????
The sat nav screen blinks regulary now and my I pod connection through the cd changer has power as it will charge my I pod.

Don't call him a "BMW Tech" if he is not currently working IN a dealership with full access to BMW TOOLS AND SOFTWARE.

There are many 'computers' that can be used. Pay the money to have a BMW dealership diagnose the issue.

He used to be a senior tech in the dealership! He has all his up to date Certs on the wall, you get the BMW stamp on your log book, so the only thing he misses is that he doesn't work in the dealer ship anymore???

Thanks for you advice, I was planning to make the trip to my nearest dealership soon, I just though it may have been something simple that someone on here might have experienced previously!!!!

Thanks anyway!

^^ I understand. But increasingly these cars require up to date BMW diagnostic programs and software that are dealerhip only (since they are downloaded from BMW secure servers on an 'as required' basis),

Given that yours is a 2005, the odds are less that it is one of those programming issues.

If the tech has the right tools I am surprised he is scratching his head. He should be able to verify power and operation of each module, ping each module, make sure it is communicationg onto the different busses.

So, HAVE YOU PUT A NEW BATTERY IN????

It makes no sense, but we see these intermittent nd seemingly unrelated things can be failing batteries. At 5+ years old, you should simply replace it- $100 and be done with it.

You can spend a lot of diagnostic time and THEN be told "replace the battery"...just do it now.

Cheers for the reply dude!
I didn't change the battery out as I charged it and tested it and it was all good, didn't think it would need changed for new?

I was in again today at the radio module checking the fuses and connections, everything looks good and still no radio.......ah well I can wait till the end of the month when I get a chance to go to the BMW dealer

If you do a few searches about BMWs and batteries you will surely begin to see that "funky stuff" goes on when these batteries get old.

It may test fine- but you issues may be related to the battery.

How old is it?

I'm telling you, 100 whatevers ($, euros, quid, pounds) and you are good for another 4 years.

I often recommend that when the battery gets this old, it is often times cheaper to replace it that pay for ONE single troubleshooting visit. And even if you replace a 4 year old battery and that wasn't it, you would have been needing to replace it soon enough!
