Creaking window
My 2011 X5 driver side window is creaking. Anyone else has this issue?
|
Does it do it when the window is open or only when it is closed?
|
When it's closed. And when it's partially opened. I think it's the swade in the window frame.
|
mine does it on the passenger side. I notice it only does it when I push the button up when it's already up to make sure it's all the way close.
|
I make sure my window is all the way up. I'm going to try fixing it myself.
|
For the passenger side, there is a TSB. Had mine fixed last week and BMW has the solution for it. Symptom is noisy door when window is closed.
I didn't ask about the drivers side. My X5 is a 2011. |

WTF? First it's the driver seat creaking/clicking (parts must be backordered, since I have not heard back from my SA) and TODAY I was backing out of my driveway (all windows fully closed) and my driver's window (although it sounded like the entire driver's side)...creaked and moaned so bad, it sounded like a wooden bucanner ship!! It now does it everytime I go in and out of a driveway, or when the torsional rigidity of the car is exercised. So annoying and disappointing!
4000 miles, 6 months and NO problems...and then BAM!! I love my car, and the 35d engine makes me happy every time I drive the car..but the interior quality/build quality is beginning to worry me. Anyone have the driver's window fixed? Please post SIB #. THANK YOU!! |
I had this problem about a year ago. X was only six months ol and I was sure it was something more serious. Turns out they put some type of film around the upper door openings on the body of the car where the felt of the door frame rubs and it completely went away. It's been over a year trouble-free.

My new 2012 has a creaky drivers seat at 300 miles. Something tells me BMW had an issue with their seat vendor. Good new is usually after one visit for a few odd things like this the cars are fine. |

NO more creaking. I mean ZERO!!! All that's left is the driver's creaking seat...and my 35d is back to flawless. :) |
How is the handling on the range rover?

I LOVE our Range Rover. If I had to choose one car out of our 3 we have...I would choose the Range Rover in a NY minute. In tight twists and turns, the X5 does honestly grip better and feel more planted, but for the size, weight and height...the Range Rover is very good. The Range Rover is just so damned comfortable, and the dash layout, design, materials and build quality is LEAPS and BOUNDS above the E70. Honestly, the Range Rover feels better than my 2010 750i and almost as good as the 2008 S550 we had! Also, 6 months of ownership and NOT one single issue with our Rangie!! ;) |
At just over 14K miles, I am developing I guess what you would call a "small" creak in my windows. It actually sounds like all four door windows. Usually over bumps. It's just starting to get hot here finally and it could be temperature, but I'll look into it.
Thanks for the info, folks - and the SIB. Now, if someone could just give me the SIB for the "windshield installed improperly and causes excessive wind noise" problem.. |

window/door creak fixed!
I had the creaking in the front doors of my 2011 X5 starting late last year. I took it to one dealer and they said that the door seals needed to be lubricated. So, they smeared some sort of grease all around them and all that did was get on my hands whenever I would open or close the door. It did not solve the problem.
So, I just took it to a different dealer and they said that there is a service bulletin for the issue that says the door seals are the problem and they have a new door seal design. He ordered the new door seals for all four doors (even though only the front doors seem to be creaking) and the noise is gone. I would hear it any time I was driving slow and would go over any slightly uneven surface. I would especially notice in when turning into our driveway - which isn't very steep. The bulletin is SIB 51 05 11. |

my 2012 front window area is starting to creak, did the seal change solve this problem for you guys?
|
Yes, it did solve the problem.
|
seems mine is the window, when i lower the window just a tad bit it stops, anyone know of a remedy? are my tints causing this ( but this noise didnt start until recently, had my tint on 4K+ miles ago)
|
Since you probably can't hurt anything by trying this, grab a piece of fine grain sandpaper, stick it between the window and the door seal and lightly move the sandpaper right to left. The surface of the seal is too smooth so it's like gym shoes on a shiny gym floor - remember how they squeak in a basketball court? If you scuff up the rubber surface, the problem should go away if it's coming from the seal. And you won't need new seals!

Sorry - I forgot to mention to be sure the sandy side is facing away from the window and toward the seal. You don't want to scratch the tinting or your window! :)

thanks car_girl, i will try that tonight..seems like its the felt area that seals the window that is causing the noise.
|
It may be temperature related. Mine started this about a month ago, got noisier as time went by and now it's a constant annoyance, creaking on every little bump and turns, and whenever the chassis flexes.

If anything, maybe I'd use 600 or 400 grit, or a very aggressive compound to 'degloss' the surface a bit...IF I were convinced this was the cause. Also, in prior models, using a rubber dressing, GummiPfledge as I recall, was another fix for creaking seals |

it stopped creaking, but then again it was 85 out...could be a temp related creak, but that would be annoying, because the creaking was happening around the 70s |
Scratching what paint?
I didn't mention that if you roll the window down first, the slot where the window goes up and down leaves a small opening where the window pops back out between 2 weather strips. If the sandpaper is left flat like it is in the new package when you buy it at the store, take the flat sheet, insert it into the slot (hold onto it tight so you don't drop it into the slot!) and press the gritty side toward the surface which contacts the window when the window is rolled up. You can do the outside or inside strip first, but after slight scuffing on the one side, wipe off any excess sand that might still be on the strip, do the other side, wipe again and be sure all sandy residue is completely removed so you don't scratch any window tinting or the glass itself if there's any grit left behind. There shouldn't be any contact with paint if you don't fold the sandpaper in half and contact the outside of the weather strip. You only need to do the part that contacts the window and that would be the inner part of each seal. I'm sorry if my first post was confusing. I wouldn't suggest anything that could damage the paint of someone's car. Just trying to offer a helpful suggestion. Squeaks like these would bug the beebers out of me.
