Front rotor replacement E70
I have replaced my front rotors yesterday. It is basically similar to E53 except for a special star bolt that BMW uses now compared to 6 point hex bolt that they use for the caliper carrier.
There's a lot of report that the caliper carrier bolt is so tough to remove in E53. It is also tough in E70 but the bolt in E70 have washer so with the special tool E-socket #18 you could remove it easier. I used #16 16 point socket and i messed up my bolts. Make sure before you do your own replacement of rotor for E-70 that you have this E18 socket. I got mine 6 set in harbor freight for $7. By the way i compared the E53 bolt with the E70 and they are same size. E70 have washer E53 bolt don't have. I used Zimmerman BMW OEM rotor and got it for around $110 each. Here's the star bolt that E70 uses compared to that of E53 (6 point hex) http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...p/DSC_3215.jpg And here's the E-socket you need for E70 rotor replacement. Everything else is similar to E53 so you can go to the how to's in E53 forum that have detailed Brake DIY. http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...p/DSC_3217.jpg Still counter clockwise removal and torque is around 40 lbs-ft if i got it right. Dumb question, but is an e18 socket the same as 18mm?
Would this work; Husky 3/8 in. Drive 6-Point 18 mmStandard Socket-H3D6P18MM at The Home Depot Also, I am assuming they used the same bolt for the rear carrier's, correct? Are there any additional special tools required for replacing the rear rotors and pads? **EDIT** Never mind. I realized that wasn't what I needed. Picked up an E18 from Napa. |
