2 questions
1) I am looking at buying an 08 X5 and cant decide if I want or need the 4.8 or the 3.0 or the D. Any impressions from owner of these vehicles? For some background, I have an E53 4.8 and love it but dont use the power it has, nor do I pull anything,,,,.
2) What kind of mileage do the 3 different motors are owners seeing? 4.8 ? 3.0 ? 3.0D ? I currently average 19.5 in my 06, never had a problem with it! Great car, I have a family member that has been nagging me to buy it from me, I just turned 100,800 miles and he will give me $20,000 for it. I think that sounds about right,,,,? Thanks. |
on my 2008 3.0, I get about 17 MPG locally, and about 22 MPG on highway. In my personal opinion, it has surprising amount of power/torque, and likely more reliable in the long run.

Diesel, 35d was available to the American market in 2009.
I had a 2007 3.0si, and while it was not slow, I always felt the E70 was too heavy for an inline 6 3.0 motor. The new 35i turbo is awesome though! |
I owned a couple of the 3.0. Coming from the 4.8 I think you will be disappointed if you went to the 3.0. The 3.0 was fine and is a great engine, but nothing like the 4.8 or the newer 35i (which rocks).
|
Have the 3.0si. Wishing I had the 35i. Actually I wished that even before I bought the 3.0. Too bad the 35i came out 3 years too late. Day-to-day driving though the 3.0 is perfectly capable.

Cool, thanks for the replies. If you had the option to move up to the X35, would you do that over the 4.8?

Well first off hats off to you for achieving nearly 20mpg in a 4.8:thumbup: That is quite impressive to a lead-footed a-hole like myself.
Why 2008? Given power is not important maybe a 2009 diesel is your best option? Good gas mileage and nice torque. |

D mileage
On my first weekend of ownership, I got 20.5 city, 27 highway. On my drive to work this AM (no highway/lots of stops and starts) I got 23.1.
Should only get better as it breaks in! |
I average almost 20-21 mpg city driving. On the Freeway, with good traffic, speeds of 60-70mph, I get about 25 mpg usually
|
We bought an '07 last fall with the 4.8. We consistenty average 19.?? mpg. (we live rural- no city driving). My wife and I both enjoy driving this car more than any other we have owned- (everything from Jags, Merc's, other BMW's,...). I don't think it would be the same without the V8. It's just a blast to drive.
The way I look at it is it probably costs me less than $35 extra a month in fuel to drive the V8 vs. the 6 (we drive less than 10k per year). If $35/mo. extra is an issue to me, I have no business driving a ~40K used car- I should get a Kia instead. Life's short- get what you want and don't sweat the small potatoes- Edit- is there an "e" in potatoes? I can never remember. |

For me its at 40000 miles per year, its bit more, but when you add it up, still not that much more. I am buying through a dealer from an auction from BMW lease returns, the 09 X35d is around $36 to 42 depending on options etc, not a bad deal I don't think. Most have less then 20K miles on them and still in full warranty. |

The 35i is a new engine, called the N54, still 3.0 litres, but: +2 turbochargers + direct injection + horsepower + torque Totally different driving experience, IMO. |

Also, 19.5 MPG combined in a 4.8is? Are you a magician? |

Believe what you want. I'm going by both the trip computer and manual check at fill ups. I havn't reset the mpg on the trip computer in several months- it presently reads 19.2. I have verified this at fill ups on numerous accasions.

You're welcome- however they were directed at Jeremym--- to refute his smart assed, know-it-all comments. Why some people get off on going on an annonymous chat board and essentially calling someone a liar for no reason and no proof I'll never know. Takes all kinds I guess.
|
^^^So you got 19.1 on a road trip AVERAGING 51.5mph.
That is NOT 'combined off highway mileage'. Yes, it is good mileage for a roadtrip. No that was not 50% city, stop-and-go, traffic lights.\ IMO A |
We consistenty average 19.?? mpg. (we live rural- no city driving).
What I quoted above in post 12- Not sure how else to say it. 18 miles from home to work. 2 stop signs. Roads are 45 and 55 mph, which = 50-65 mph driving. Never said city driving. NO road trip was part of this. I have not reset the trip computer for several months. Then I'm pretty much called a liar (post 18), so I posted the pics. Next thing you know someone will post wanting to know what everyones income is. Oh, wait.......nevermind. |

I've moved on, a while ago, but you're still stuck in last-week time. Quote:
