Tires
I am new to the BMW family. My other car is a G37 and it needs service every 3750 miles. At each service the tire pressure is checked and I think they do tire rotation every 7500 miles. Now that I have the X5 I am not sure whether to wait for an entire year before the tires are rotated. What do you guys ordinarily do for tire rotation and checking tire pressure?

get a tire gauge:dunno:

I rotate every year when I swap out to winter setup.

ROTATE YOUR TIRES!
The only reason BMW doesnt recomment it is that they would need to PAY for it!! SInce they do 'free [substandard] maintenance' every 10-15k miles, they would then be changing tires that are substantially worn- which CAN be a bad idea. However if YOU rotate them every 5k you will get more miles and better wear. Nice uniform wear, no issues with handling. DO NOT believe the utter BS about 'handling issues' if you rotate them. Nonsense. Oh, check your tire pressure once a month. I cannot imagine asking anyone to check my tire pressures.... |
If you have the staggered 20"s then you really aren't gaining much in terms of rotating. But if you don't, as ard said, do it. I did it on my e53 and I got like 55K miles on my 1st set of tires.

You are just considering the US. BMW do not offer prepaid maintenance in many parts of the world, and they recommend to not rotate tires there either. Here in Canada they only maintain scheduled items, and tires wouldn't be scheduled in any case. There goes that argument. Rotating a worn tire will definitely impact handling because tires take a set as they wear. It is a safety and performance issue. You agree that rotating substantially worn tires will impact handling; what constitutes substantial? I haven't rotated any tire on any BMW I have owned since 1994, and have never had uneven tire wear. On my E53 the original tires looked good when I traded it at over 70,000 km. Correct pressures and alignment work wonders. Not rotating tires is simply not BS, it is best practice. |
Thx, I will go with the consensus message, do not roatate and check tire pressure at least monthly.

I'm not sure what BMW has to gain by telling drivers not to rotate tires. Unless they have some sort of agreement with tire companies. That being said, one can do what ever they like in this regard but it would seem to me that the designer of the vehicle might know a bit more about what should be done regarding rotations.
As far as "'free [substandard] maintenance' every 10-15k miles" i would like to see the evidence that supports that statement. |
