X5 2009 diesel consumption issue

Hi Guys,

I hope that someone may be able to help me out.

I have an X5 E70 X5 xDrive30d SE 2009. I used to get 280 - 300 miles per tank full. My car then went into the local dealership for attention to the power steering (new hose required).
Now I only get 250 - 260 miles per tank full.
Could it be the fuel that I am using - Shell (Same Garage) or Could it be something else ?
Has anyone got any suggestions for me ?

Regards
Sanjiv

Something is wrong

Even your original mileage is awful. At 260 miles per tank you're only getting 11-12mpg. Looking at other threads, most diesel owners (myself included) are getting about 24mpg of mixed driving. Unless you are towing uphill against the wind in a blizzard you should be getting about 500 miles per tankful. I've easily bested 500 miles and gotten nearly 600 with mostly highway driving and I've heard some getting over 600 miles.

Any suggestions ?
Have other people got 500 miles to a full tank on mixed driving ?
I only attain that with long distance driving, on in town mixed driving.

Worth checking fuel and air filters.

You are in a congested city, you won't get the same mileage as on the open road.

It had a
1) Microfilter Service (B64.31.6.945.586)
2) Oil filter Element (B11.42.7.788.460)
change on 10th May 2011.

Neither are those are engine air or fuel filters. The microfilter is for cabin air, not engine combustion air.

Many thanks for your reply. I am still concerned about the mileage issue - My vehicle doing only 280 miles as opposed to 500 miles (mixed driving).

Clogged air or fuel filters will negatively impact mileage.

That sounds way out of whack. Our 2004 3.0 litre petrol X3 does better mpg than that, we get 300 miles out of a full tank (half slow trips around central London, the rest on the North Circular and M25). A car like yours should be doing 400 on a tank at least if not 500 imo.

Can anyone recommend a good BMW dealer in North West London - who could look into this for me.

Wait, you have a x5 30D? This would be a different engine compared to the US version.

Please tell us how many gallons of diesel you fill up with to achieve the ~260 miles. Something doesn't sound right about your mpg, but perhaps you like to fill up at the halfway mark?

sanjivsai 07-18-2011 12:38 PM

I used to fill 70 litres (UK) which lasts 280 miles (The reserve light comes on), this is now only 260 miles. This used to be 18.2 miles per UK gallon and is now 15 miles per UK gallon.

Not that I think that 260 miles/tank is expected, but what are your driving habits? I drive many short trips, which is not quite what a diesel engine does best with. I would get quite a bit less than most report on this forum out of my 35d: 350-420 miles/tank. I would usually get about 375. Obviously that is still quite a bit more than your current 260.

I would definitely question the dealer why your mileage is so sucky.
