FAQ for 2012 5.0i?
The manual and videos posted by BMW are helpful - Owner's Manual Videos - BMW North America.
I had a short training session with the salesperson and have done limited searches here. But is there a new-to-me FAQ for those questions that are asked all the time? I have most of what I want configured with little time to devote to this but I have misses especially when compared to the BMW videos. For example, I have Twitter going but not the mobile office email. I have most of the nav underway but am disappointed the night mode is not automatic. My traditional style garage door opener will not pair with the car after 5 or so attempts. I am using both USB ports and am not sure if the iPhone 4 media cradle will add features that would be useful to me. Some of my contacts and some addresses do not show up in the X5. Anyway is thee a web devoted to such info? BTW, I have sports and premium but not techology. |
Did BMW or Apple come out with an iphone update for Mobile Office? I recall that 9 or 10 months ago it only worked with Blackberry.
I'm still waiting for the ipad holder thing that's supposed to come out Summer 2011.... |
"My traditional style garage door opener will not pair with the car after 5 or so attempts"
I don't have a 2012, but if its the same system on all the other car manufacturers, I had to literally touch my remote to the mirror for it to take. |

Reading this forum and searching is the best I've found. I picked up my 50i in August from the Performance Center. As someone else said, email only works with Blackberry, not iPhone. At the recommendation of the Performance Center delivery guy (Johnathon), I programmed button "6" to switch between night & day mode for nav. Just a quick button press switches it now. It's the same Homelink as everyone else uses. If it accepts the program, then likely your opener is a rolling code model and you will need to set the opener in the garage to learn mode, then push the button in the X5 to teach the opener the code that is stored in your X5. I was warned to only use the USB port in the glove box to load songs off a USB stick. Performance Center folks said other devices may short it out. The cradle connects the iPhone to the external antenna on the roof, the USB cable does not. Driving back from Spartanburg, there were places where by docked phone had service and the other iphone in the truck did not. |
Thanks for the helpful posts.

How do you program buttons? You mentioned the rep programed button number 6 for night day toggle.

Until the iPhone 5 comes out, yes. If the form factor is changed, I would expect it will NOT work. It took BMW a year to bring out the iPhone 4 cradle. I'll stick with my 4.

After having searched here and elsewhere, I remain confused on the following.
Could someone tell me what is the difference using my iPhone 4 in the X5 with the Apple cable versus the $120 snap-in adapter versus the $260 snap-in media/BMW apps adapter (e.g. video playback + 'plug-in')? At this point, I have only tried out the Apple cable which does give some basic function of the BMW apps like Twitter and the calendar. I suppose this cable would also enable the "last mile" and "web radio"? |
Okay, here is my question for today.
The dealer added an extra charge for tinting and floormats. I am scheduled to turn in the 2012 X5 on Friday for tinting. Now that I have actually driven around town it is obvious that all the windows are tinted. So how does this play out? Did BMW do this or did the dealer just forget? Build date is 7/11/11 and purchase date was 9/16/11. Edited to say that this morning sales said I have tint from the factory but it is certainly much more tint than our 2008 X5 4.8i. |
