Dinan Stage 1 - Should I Do It?
 

I have a 6-month old 2012 X5 50i. My local BMW dealer is offering the Dinan Stage 1 performance engine software upgrade at a 15% discount (or about $2,550). I am considering whether or not I should spring for this.

I have a couple of questions for those of you with experience in this area:
In practical terms, is there a noticeable improvement in performance with the upgrade?
Is there any effect on gas mileage?
Has anyone had issues after installation?

Yes there is a noticable difference.

Your mileage doesn't change due to the installation as long as you drive the same as previously. If you take advantage of the new found power, your mileage will drop.

it's an unreal upgrade....totally worth it.

It took about two 7-10 days of driving before it felt like the power was "on tap", but now that the car has re-learned my driving style, it's pretty impressive.

I'm really continually amazed at the output. I'm exicted about the stage 2 upgrade, but have no idea when that will become available.

If you don't consider yourself mature enough for the inline 6, definitely get the upgrade. It's adds hooligan amounts of power, but only when you put your foot into it. Otherwise, it drives it does now.

As others have noted, gas mileage is pretty much the same on commuting duty. You only pay the penalty when you get on it, but otherwise the mileage is more or less unchanged.

I got the upgrade within week of getting 2012 m sport model. Well worth money. Ave about 16 mpg, about same as stock 50i. Get over 20mpg with 8sp trans on the hw. The stage 2 upgrade will come out in about a month and will cost me the increment over stage 1, about $500. What will provide more power at lower rpm range below 2000.
Will get over 500 hp and 580 torque. I'm definitely getting that when available. Dinan has great warranty, I had install at local BMW. Do it and you won't have buyers remorse.

Is there any kinda Dinan upgrade for the '09 E70 4.8? Seems like nothing is available when I go to their website.
