After further digging, the original BMW retrofit kit is made by Phillips, in some factory in China (gee, what a surprise).

Its crazy to me that this is an OEM kit. There is no finesse in the final look. I'm not surprised anyone else thought it was just an aftermarket tack-on. They probably could have designed a plastic mesh cover to make it look a little more integrated with the LED they chose. But the problem really looks like it started with the LED they chose which does not fit completely across or follow the angle of the opening. Kind of disappointing that if BMW were to come out with some kind of LED fog that it was not even appropriately designed with more consideration. All these manufacturers (even lower end) who are doing this with much more thought.
