4.8i oil change question

Doing an oil change on my 07 4.8i. The filter canister is under the car on the 4.8i. I will put the truck on my ramps. My question is: should I fill the canister with oil with the new filter installed and how does one do this since it is under the car? Is there a "trick"? Trying to prevent oil starvation on start up. This is easy when the canister is topside you can just fill the canister , but underneath is more difficult. Also, I will be evacuating the oil through the dipstick with my extractor. Should I drain the filter canister before I suck the oil out or after?:dunno:

Drain the canister after you have evacuated as much oil as you can get out with your vacuum pump. If you like, you could then open the oil pan drain plug and see how much is left in there, just for interest. I always prefer to use the drain plug, and leave it draining for a while. I would only use an extraction pump on a boat engine where it was not possible to get underneath the pan.

While it is theoretically beneficial to prefill the canister, I wouldn't go to any trouble to do so. I would just make sure the vehicle idles on first restart, until it has built up oil pressure, with no revs.

drain the filter, drain the pan. replace the filter plug, remove the filter.

replace the filter, replace the pan plug. replace the oil. start the truck.

have a nice day...............

Quoted for truth.
