CEL came on this week...
Hi all,
Have a 2010 35d with a hair over 30k on the odometer and the check engine light came on Monday. Have an appointment scheduled on Thursday to take it in. Removed the gas cap and re-tightened it, but the light is still on. Have been reading all the CEL issue posts on here and on other boards. Hope this isn't the start of a recurring issue... But appreciate all the info about tracking the codes, mileage and work done for future use... Guess I'll know more Thursday. I'll post the error code Thursday or Friday when I know what it is. Love this car... Just took it from TN to Destin, Fl and got 26mpg loaded with 3 adults, 2 kids and luggage. Drove down there and drove around for three days on one tank of gas. I'll keep everyone posted. |
Same issue last month at 25,000 miles on my 2010. My OBD reader indicated a generic issue on air intake.......I suspected a sensor.....they couldn't find anything on first two visits.....cleared the codes, then would come back on within 5 miles from shop.
On the thrd visit, they replaced in charge air cooler......light still came on.......then they replaced a sensor and all is well....... |
Wife said light went off today. Keeping the appt though so I can get the code documented. Also just put new shoes on and am having the alignment checked.
I'm going to thread jack my own thread for a second... Put Conti ExtremeContact DWS in stock size on, and though it's still early, my first impressions of this tire are VERY positive. Ample sidewall strength to provide sharp turn in (a bit more muted than the Michelin RFTs that came with it, but still sporting enough), and the ride is soooooo much better. Road noise is non-existent, too. If they wear as well as they are supposed to, I'll be one happy camper. Diesel Guy, do you remember what code yours threw? Thanks, Boyce |
1. You actually don't have a 'gas cap'.
2. Post the codes. Make sure they READ and report the code and not just clear it then look. 3. Minimize TOE on the alignment..don't just go with something within the "BMW specs". A |
Quote:
2. Good point. They will get very specific instructions to print and provide a copy of the OBD results. 3. I always have them set the toe as close to 0,00 as possible, within spec. I believe this is 0,02'. They will not set it out of spec, but 0,02' is sufficient to eliminate outside edge wear, unless camber starts to drift toward the + side. |
I can't remember the code....maybe P07.....it was off of an inexpensive OBD reader that doesn't give the details that the dealership would see.....
Ard's correct........ You manned up and bought a diesel.......stop worrying about 'gas mileage' or 'gas caps'.....time to fuel up boys! |
I should have put a :) after that...the whole fuel/gas thing is along running quibble.
;) |
No problem, thought it was funny. ;)

Update...
Picked up the X5 today. The following fault codes were stored, non of which would trip the CEL according to their computer:
- 46F2: DeNOx system, function: trouble code P204F, 1 instance at 48976km - 4BC3: Exhaust-gas temperature controller, plausibility: trouble code P244C, 1 instance at 46664km - 474D: Intercooler, plausibility: trouble code P026A, 2 instances at 49802km and 49872km They said there was no code stored that would have tripped the CEL, but I suspect it was deleted or they just didn't give it to me. :dunno: CEL went off Wednesday after being on for two days, and hasn't come back on. They did perform a reprogramming under SIB 18 02 10. Anyone have any insight on the codes above? |
474D: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...esolution.html
I am going to opine that they are lying or incompetent. I suspect ALL of those are CELs... (The CEL cannot come on without a code to cause it! For an SA to lie to you with a straight face is troubling...) If you search my posts, you will find that I had multiple issues with my 2010 diesel around ALL the areas your codes seem to touch. After 60 days in the shop, I lemoned it and have a 2012 diesel. HOWEVER, I do believe the root cause was poor software design and validation by BMW...as a result I suspect that they have been pushing out new software to cars to better trap 'real' errors and reject spurious crap.... my issue was that they'd keep testing/failing/replacing parts/failing... Give it a shot, I think it will be stable moving forward.... A |
Thanks Ard, I hope you're right. As soon as the CEL came on this week I glued myself to your CEL thread... Very informational... Appreciate the feedback and lessons learned.
I can't find any info online for SIB 18 02 10. Any ideas what that might be? I found 18 03 10, which relates to "SES is on due to Faults with a filter in the exhaust system". Not sure how SIB's are numbered, or relate to each other. Found it interesting they performed a SIB for a software upgrade when they say no fault could be found that tripped the CEL. ;) |
Uh oh...
Well, had the X back for about 30 miles...
Picked her up this morning and drove to the office (about 15 miles). Got in this afternoon to go home and got the "engine malfunction, reduced power" warning about 5 minutes into the trip. After it came up the 4th time, I may a u-turn and headed straight back to BMW. On the way there, I got the fault another 12 times, and the X went into limp mode once (while on the interstate... great timing). Check Control showed "all systems ok" the whole time. Once there, i told them I wasn't leaving until they ran the OBD tests and I had copies of the fault codes. So, here they are: - 4D76: charging air temp sensor - difference, starting value to reference temp too high - one instance - 4B82: EGR rate control, control deviation - exhaust gas recirculating rate too low/positive control deviation - one instance - 4C9F: EGR valve, plausibility - mechanically faulty near open position, 243 instances recorded - 4C9E: EGR valve, plausibility - mechanically faulty near closed position, 243 instances recorded None of these codes were present yesterday when it was in for the CEL. :stickpoke: The tech, who did the work yesterday for the CEL, and did the reprogramming per SIB 18 02 10 (still not sure what this is for. The tech said it prescribes a reprogramming for a CEL with no faults present), suspects the new programming is causing today's issues. I hope this is not the start of long-term issues with this car. We love the vehicle, and just want her back. |
Had you seen my lemon thread? Lets hope not... (but it only cost me $1800 to trade my 2010 with 32k miles for the new 2012)
One word pricked up my ears: "no fault present"... just because a code is not 'present' nor 'active' does not mean there should be no CEL. In other words, issues come up and codes are tripped- and may then go away...but once they trip (depending on the code and the frequency) they WILL set a CEL. So you may go to BMW, they may read 'old' codes, find none present and say "huh, no present codes". I would be shocked if they have NOT started a PUMA case on your car. For a period of time, EVERY diesel CEL was an immediate PUMA. Again, sorry to hear- keep track of the days and what they are telling you... make sure you get everything documented in the written work orders and invoices. Codes, what was done, etc, etc A |
Already brushing up on the lemon laws. Thankfully in TN, it covers all owners (1st, and subsequent) during the factory warranty period. No reason to get worried just yet, as I've had no repeat faults. It seems plausible that the software upgrade created more issues than it solved.
|
Should have added... "no repeat faults that we know of".
Besides, it's a CPO, with almost 70k miles left on the warranty... So time would seem to be on my side. |

Depending on how things evolve, the CEL for "emissions errors" could be considered the "fault"... it does not need to be the same precise code... While I'd agree that you might suspect the software 'upgrade', there is only tone set of code for your car. I suppose your tech might have screwed up and not properly configured the car, or failed to reprogram certain modules. But I do not think it is "bad software"...if it were, every car would have issues and a fix would take BMW weeks to fix. Again, I suspect improper programming. GL! A |
Fixed?
My wife picked up the Xd today. It was ready Monday, but I told them to keep it until they were sure it was fixed. The service manager drove it home Monday night and last night with no issues. I'm out of town so I don't have the paperwork in front of me, but I know they replaced the charge air temp sensor.
More info tomorrow night when I can review the work order. |
Looks like it was the charge air temp sensor. They replaced it with part# 13-62-812-741 after performing several tests on the EGR system (including checking for ground faults, bad fuses, and EGR controller outputs, and Pinot tests between the EGR controller and the DDE module.
Apparently, the EGR controller relies on data from the charge air sensor for proper operation, so when the charge air sensor went, it also started throwing the EGR codes. :dunno: She seems to be running fine now. Fingers crossed! |
Had CEL come on earlier today, going to dealer tomorrow... 23K miles otherwise trouble-free files. Did have another CEL when car had 2500mi - it was bad intake pipe (had micro cuts in the rubber, perhaps during assembly)...
Will find out tomorrow. |
I had CEL over a year ago - dealer 'fixed it' and it stayed off for many months. Came back a couple of months ago - dealer looked again and said it was most likely a temperature sensor but intermmittent (I agree it was intermittent). Eventaully fault came on fully and light would no longer go off by itself. Dealer looked again and found two problems: sensor on a turbocharger and fault fuel filter heater. Both replaced under warranty and fault now clear. Car's performance in very low temperatures is also definitiely improved

Absolutely UNACCEPTABLE behavior by the dealer..every failure is logged, they can test, track and repair even intermittent issues. A |
Mine is still at the dealer, will learn more today, but they said they are waiting on the headquarters to advise them on something... As I was in a meeting when call came, I couldnt ask "right questions"...
|
Got a call from SA.... EGR valve, will be replaced and car re-programmed... Picking up tomorrow.
|
So EGR has been replaced, car re-programmed, all looks good.
An interesting side effect to note - after re-programming, the 4x4/ DSC malfunction error came up (multiple times, each time reset itself after engine restarts)... Aparently re-programming resulted in steering angle sensor loosing its settings, and it had to be-calibrated. All well since then. |
Just catching up on this thread. Have a 2011 X35 d with 19,800 miles and just had a CEL when I put it in reverse to back out of the garage at work this evening. Taking it in to Santa Monica BMW on Monday. First 19,800 miles have been trouble free.
