Exhaust inside

Has anyone experienced a diesel exhaust smell inside the vehicle? It is almost overwhelming at startup and whenever I slow to a stop.

Goes in for last chance "free" service on Monday, 49, 850 miles/

I recall someone else posting of the same issue on either this forum or bimmerfest. IIRC, I think they ended up having an exhaust leak somewhere that the dealer fixed. Do a search on the forums and I'm sure it will come up. Good luck!

We had that issue start around 16000 miles and brought in several times where multiple dealerships said they could not replicate. In the end they did acknowledge the problem and replaced our EGR valve and something else and supposedly that fixed it (sorry threw the documents away). It was in the shop regularly for about four months to actually get it resolved. We sold it this summer shortly after because it was obvious that here in the U.S. diesels seem to be like a spaceship from another planet. We loved the car otherwise but were down to less than 12k left on warranty I wasn't willing to foot the bill while BMW techs try to figure out the diesel and give me the runaround.

Started to notice this about a week about, for now, just at start-up. Just got a recall notice in mail for changes to heater on exhaust fluid tank draining battery. Plan on having it looked at when take in for the recall item. 2009 35d, 33,000 mls. Any results from your Monday service appointment?

Yes, they replaced the high pressure EGR cooler. Drove a 328ix for a couple of days. Nice little car, sufficient power, but it stickered for $43K???

Felt good to be back in the X. They had a white X5M with carbon fiber treatment and perforated leather on the floor- $99k. Also a Vermillion Red 650i vert with white interior, but the black 650ixDrive vert with red iinterior loaded loaded at $105k, well, if only... (it had a stick)

After searching around, I found several references to EGR cooler. Looking at mine, found black soot around the part. Dropped off for service today, service tech has seen other failures like this. EGR cooler to be replaced, of course, part not in stock. Still don't understand how vapors make it into cabin unless air intake for cabin air somewhere nearby. Supposed to get car back tomorrow, will post comments on service report.

I'd like to know what the EGR Cooler costs, as I think I may be buying the next one.

EGR Assembly leaking exhaust at seam WT - Smoke Test
11-71-7-812-513 Exhaust Cooler listed on RealOEM.com as $670.51

Has solved the fumes in the cabin problem. Happy to be back on the road.

I am smelling diesel from the engine at start-up. Where does one look for this soot around the EGR cooler?
