BECAUSE THEY ARE SCREWING YOU ON THE PART!!!! Anyway, ask BMW- sure. This is one single code??? How many times did this occur? (The dealer can look at the diagnostic software and see if this was a 'once' or if it is all the time.) You would be a fool to say OK. The dealer knows exactly how to press your buttons I am guessing..."you might get stranded"... could be, is that worth $7500? Clear the fault, trade it in on a new car. A PS You chose to own a car without a warranty... why? |
how come a 3-4 year old car only got 8400 miles?
|
Yeah, I thought so too. The SA said it's the only code stored in the vehicle, but not sure about the frequency, though this was the first time I've seen the warning appear on the iDrive screen.
I told them I will drive it for some more and see what comes of it. It's way too much money. Then I called BMW headquarters and explained the situation. They agreed with the peculiarity of the breakdown at such low mileage, and the warranty was only 4 months past. They responded positively and said they would contact with the dealer and see what can be done. I didn't buy the extended warranty because first of all, I go overseas a lot and it means little driving, thus low mileage (answers your question Norge;)) and my cost/benefit analysis favored forgoing the ext. warranty. Secondly, I don't drive too aggressively, but I guess using kickdowns every once in a while is being too aggressive by BMW's standard. Finally, this is my first German vehicle. I didn't know what I was in for. Now I do. |
I guess I need to decide which forum I will follow this issue on.....
confusing. ;) AFAIK, the diagnostic software should be able to tell them when the 'event' or error occurred, and how many times it has occurred prior to the last time. If this is a 'one off' event, I'd be inclined to drive it and see how it goes. You might also want to find a shop that has experience inside these trannies. Is the tranny fluid OK? Level good? Not burned? A shop that actually opens ATs and has real experience (remember, the BMW dealer is just a parts replacer- they know virtually nothing about how the tranny works, they read the code, look on the computer and it says 'replace transmission')... Fluid gets very thin when hot, maybe you lost fluid pressure momentarily and the clutch threw an error when it was trying to shift...still, should not happen... (A failure mode I've seen in other trans is age and heat leading to shrinkage of seals, as a result you loose hydraulic pressures and shifts become sloppy- this leads to increased wear...eventually you are stuck without some gears/clutches...) Why use kickdowns??? I cannot imagine a 'controlled' aggressive drive scenario where I'd want to use the tranny to let itself change gear- too uncontrolled...I'd want to manually put it into the gear I want. Enough of that.... Having said that, this should not cause this failure. I've had a few german cars and not had this issue... I know you're just ticked off. Good Luck! A PS Push on BMW, but also find a shop to help. I suspect you will get to a "we will pay 25%" or something- which is STILL outrageous. You really want to get a better idea of the truth, now, before you are forced to make a bad decision. PPS Go to getbmwparts.com. A new BMW tranny is US$5700. |
I got the new transmission for free. Going through the break in procedure again. The whole process feels like getting a new car. Almost.
Haven't had the chance to use higher gears. Being in a heavy traffic and staying mostly in 2nd and 3rd gears, I didn't feel too much of a difference, except the throttle felt sort of more sensitive, possibly related to driver adaptation. If I had to pay for the new unit, I don't think I would've went for it. While the vehicle was in the center, I complained about the noise from the trunk and showed them the pdf file someone on xoutpost posted. It's a trunk adjustment procedure and now it's all quiet and perfect. |
