Trade in value ! What do u guys think ?

Thinking of upgrading my '09 3.0 to '12 x5d, I'm getting very competitive pricing ($12k off) but getting killed on my trade. They are offering me $32,500 on my trade :

2009*x5 3.0 alpine white w/ black Nevada leather*
-34k miles
-tech pkg
-prem pkg
-cold weather
-comfort acc
-3rd row
-4.8 20" wheels (oe 214) original 18" wheels/tires avail*
-wheel arches for the 20" sport
-4.8 square v8 exhaust tips
-immaculate condition (no scratches or dents)
-running boards

I see them on cars.com going for $42-46k, what do guys think a fair amount for the trade is ? I was looking more like $35-38k . . .

Certainly no used car/trade in price xpert here, but imo, that dlr is banging you, as he seems not to want the car; he will probably w'sale it. The cars you see on cars.com are not necessarily selling for those prices.

I would speculate that you could get $35Gs+ from a willing private buyer; the dlr is not in biz to keep anyone happy, and is looking to move a new unit, not make you feel good on a trade in that has a yearish left of warranty miles.

You could try another dlr...there are several in Philly/South Jersey.

Do some digging on QwkAg's links, and I suspect some of the Used Pricing mavens will also respond, but these cars are historically rapidly depreciating assets, and it will not get 'better' for your car, or any X anytime in our lifetime, imo.

Thanks for the replies, sadly enough I do see the current trend of luxury cars taking large hits in resale value. A lot of the resale pricing has dropped in the last few months, don't know if it's attributed to end of the year sales or just the bad economy . . .

try taking it to Carmax, you'd be surprised what they'll pay out.

Agreed... Take it to CarMax and make the dealer match that price so you get the sales tax credit.

The dealer going offer you a crazy and insane low price on the trade in. Take your car to Carmax or private sell.

I just placed an order for a 2012 35i Premium about two weeks ago. While waiting for the paper work, I asked my CA for a trade-in value for my 2007 X5 at 45K miles w/ premium package, technology package, rear climate, running board, and non-oem 20" wheels. Abt. 30 mins later, he came back and gave me an offered at $23K and he stated that is the best that they can do. Yup, $23K for my car. I casually asked him to give me my car key back.

I took it to CarMax and they offered me at $27.5K.

Try to put your car on Craiglist. I just sold my car less than two days of listing for $30K.

Good luck!

Never heard of carmax, searched my zip code (19132, phila) and came up with nothing. Anyone know of anything similar in the tri-state area ?
