OEM winter tire/wheel setup for '12 sport activity?

Posting for my parents here- my mom just took delivery of a '12 X5 35i sport activity. They now need a winter set of wheels/tires. They are not interested in replicas and want OEM wheels.

BMW canada site has these two packages- the second one with staggered wheels and 285's in the rear looks perfect, but I don't see that on the BMW US site. Can they get these? BMW canada winter tire link

What about TPMS on this truck? Does the dealer have to do the wheel swap to reprogram the tire sensors?

The 223Ms as shown are the standard 50i M Sport wheels. I am sure a US dealer can order them. My 50i came with them. I just went for a tire swap for now and put staggered Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow winter tires on them. They were great last winter and sacrifiiced little dry performance.

If you purchase new wheels, you need new sensors. Either from BMW or tirerack.com. Make sure you specify its a '12 as the sensors have changed since my '11. Any tire dealer can mount them but you'll have to go into iDrive and do a reset.

Here they were in action on a steep driveway in WV.

I just bought a new Winter set for my 2009 X5 M Sport: Style 223M with Pirelli Scorpion Snow & Ice (staggered). This package isn't available in the U.S. from the factory. However, you can buy the parts separately and have the dealer put everything together. I found a BMW dealer in Canada that had one of these packages direct from the factory. Here is my X5 with the new Winter set:

You should contact one of the multiple on-line BMW dealers that sells at under MSRP. Not "BMW USA", but bmw of south atlanta, getbmwparts.com, etc.

They can easily pay 2x more going to a local dealer for the exact same BMW parts.

Or they can buy OE wheels from someone looking to upgrade.

Okay, showed the above photo to my parents, they now want to get a second set of the same 20's that they have now, and use non-run flat snows on 'em since they got the optional full sized spare tire with the truck.

Should I ebay a set of take-offs and buy the tires ourselves? We have a family friend in the parts dept at our local BMW dealer- so we can get them almost at costs- but that's still probably more $$$ than take-offs.

What 'full sized spare'? I thought the only option is the compact spare... (and it's not a real 'truck' ;) )

The 19" gives you more choices in winter tires...and the thing that matters with respect to the spare is overall tire diameter, NOT wheel diameter. BMW sells the same spare with 18, 19 and 20 inch rims...they just change the rubber profile on each. AFAIK

Oh, I didn't see the spare, just know they ordered the "SUV" with it.

:iagree:
This is why I went with the OEM 19" Style 223's; there is more of a selection of 19" winter tires versus 20".

Thanks for the help- they ordered the BMW 19" winter/tire set with 255's all around and scorpion ice and snows.
