Intake manifold replacement
 

Hi all

Had a small oil leak on our E70 2007 3.0d X5 about 4 mths ago, took it to the dealer for diagnosis. SA advised that it was a faulty crankcase/oil separator (CCV) that caused the oil leak, total billed was $1000 for a replacement including labour.

Another oil leak again just before Christmas, bought it back again to the dealer. The SA advised the intake manifold now needs to be replaced. Is this a common problem for E70 X5?

Our X5 is just over four years and done 80,000km and has been serviced regularly, quite disappointed with this car!!:banghead:

What PRECISELY has broken on the intake manifold??? I'd try and find an independent BMW specialist

SA said the oil leak is from the intake manifold and will potentially cause malfunction of the 6 x swirl flaps. If these flaps are broken, it'll go into the cylinders and pistons and trigger bigger problem - ie. engine seizure.

I've googled this and found it is a common problem with the E60 530d. I guess this is more a diesel engine related issue.

I had the same thing... took in for an oil change... replaced PCV.. still leaked and then got the Manifold replacement story $1600AUD part + Labour... told them to clean it up a bit and not replace as I am getting rid of the car soon... I think the bit about the swirl flaps is only applicable to the E53 when they use metal flaps , but not sure ... am taking it to an independent to see options shorlty.

that sucks, glad i weren't the only one. Well we took it to BMW S***y, they offered to pay half for the parts and some discounts on labour as a goodwill gesture, still worked out over $1500.

it has been a month since they fixed it, no sign of oil leak yet.

was thinking to write a letter to BMW Australia to complaint about the oil leak, perhaps we should do it together?

Is this some kind of special failure mode that only affects cars serviced by BMW Sydney?

Hi.... could write a ltter but doubt it would work... seems that not many have had this on the X5 yet... or are ignoring the problem... still have to take it to an independent guy as I can't believe that there is not a gasket or something similar... I'm probably selling soon so it's not worrying me too much..

i believe only the early version of the E70 diesel are affected <2008.

took our X5 back again last week for a minor repair as they broke the engine partition seal whilst replacing the manifold, they confirmed no more engine oil leak which is a good thing.

i did consider not fixing it and sell it, but my plan is hold it off until the release of the new X5 F15. the current E70 LCI is very similar except the 8 speed gearbox and a few minor cosmetic changes such as LED taillight, DDL etc, not worth upgrading it.

I'm having the same issue, sent my 2009 E83 X3 3.0d to a local BMW specialist for service/check oil leaks few months ago....they suggested to replace the PCV....however oil still leaks !

Sent back to the local specialist yesterday and found out the shaft which drives the butterfly causing the leaks, cant repair have to order a brand new intake manifold unit.

parts + labour = $2389 aud

My car just had 55000Kms, I'm quite disappointed with BMW.

You should have taken it to the dealer or where you bought your car from, you might able to get some compensation from BMW Australia under a goodwill.

$2,400 is not bad for an intake manifold replacement.
