Engine noise when starting from cold

2008 X5 3.0 with 50,000 miles
2 months out of BMW warranty with still in extended warranty.

Engine is very loud when I start in the morning and it is cold outside. It becomes quiet after a while. Earlier it used to be once in a while but lately it is become more frequent. On my last service I mentioned it to the mechanic but engine was smooth and quiet by that time.

Based upon the noise the mechanic suggested exhaust leak. any experience / ideas?
I don't mind waiting but don't want to be stranded?

Here's the video: X5-noise - YouTube

That's the ticking that I just got fixed under SIB11-09-07. Also a '08 3.0si.

Says they replaced HVA's and roller drag levers.

Original thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...gine-cold.html (pdf for SIB is also in there)

Thanks for the response.

Your analysis is spot-on and I have noticed the noise under the conditions described.

rh71,
how did you get the dealer to reproduce it? In my case it only happens when it is really cold outside and car has been parked for a while. I have had my X5 at dealer for 3 days and he says he can't reproduce it. I showed him the SIB and he agreed with it but he says he still has to reproduce in order to move forward and make a warranty claim. little frustrating!

I don't believe they reproduced it. I only mentioned it and showed him the SIB doc so I was fortunate that he believed me - I have a history with my SA since I always use him in particular. It really only happened like 3 times in almost 4 years for me so reproducing it would've been next to impossible. The only thing I can suggest is to show them the video on your phone or something. I've had luck with that as he "validated" another issue for me after seeing it happen on video.

Failing that, bring it to another dealer with the SIB and video in hand.

Also know that if you have it documented as a reported problem (make sure it's somewhere in their records) and it happens again a few months out of warranty, they should still help you out.
