Euroelectric tow hitch on US model
 

I was wondering if anyone installed the Euro electric swivel hitch on there e70 in the US. I know it is not DOT because it does not have the chain connectors but I was wondering if anyone ever installed it in an US model?

Cool, yes but ball size is a different diameter, and we use a different 7-pin electrical connector. Have you towed heavy in the U.S. before? My advice is to get hooked up by a pro and use a proportional controller like Tekonsha (eg. Prodigy). EU trailers are a completely different standard. Our SAV's claim 6000 lb. tow rating, but be aware of the GCWR, the gross combined weight rating. The vehicle’s loaded weight, with the anticipated load of passengers and baggage aboard must be subtracted from the gcwr to determine the realistic tow rating.

Well, I guess that is a deal breaker ... was hoping that the only difference is the chain holes but this is more than I thought. :-(

I use a Euro hitch, not electric though. The ball size is 50mm, practically the same as a 2inch ball. Mine has hooks for the chains. I tow a 21 foot chris craft (about 4000 pounds) with no problems. Trailer coupler fits the Euro ball perfectly, and tightly. I use BMW US towbar electrics, and had it coded by the dealer. My service advisor and others really liked the hitch and how it mounted without cutting the bumper.

There are a couple to chose from OEM. One looks like the Euro type with the curved forging. I would recommend you specify a Class III hitch whether you go OEM or aftermarket. Several designs for the E70, some require either a new fascia, or cutting. Some in my opinion are too low, trying to avoid the fascia issue and decrease the vehicles rear clearance.
