I have an '08 pre-LCI and I've had the issue where I can't shift out of park (into D or R). The fix is to turn the ignition off and back on and it's fine again. Has happened 3 times in 4 years. Electronic gremlin, hopefully, which is usually fixable with "reboots".

We did turn the car on and off several times, but that did not work for our 2012, unfortunately. Fortunately a "hard" reset worked, though!

Given BMW uses ZF transmissions that are also supplied to other manufacturers, I wonder whether lack of release was a BMW-specific requirement, or Audi and others have this 'feature' too now.

I suspect BMW is a big enough customer of ZF they could have it if they wanted it.

ILC32, did you ever get a resolution and root cause on why your vehicle got stuck in park? Yesterday I experienced the same issue; waiting on the call back from dealership come Tuesday.

Stuck in Park

I have a post on the forum under "Transmission malfunction". Dealer hasn't been able to solve it so far. 3rd time towed in,yes they needed dollies to drag it up the flat bed after sending 2 tow trucks too.
Can you tell me what they did to stop the "Gremlin" from coming back? Getting to the point of selling my baby for reliability issues.

2012 X5 35i Stuck in Park

My 2011 E70 just had the Mechatronic replaced to fix an issue matching the symptoms described in this thread.

Stuck in Park; FIXED

I picked up my X5 yesterday. I had the Mechatronics unit replaced. My vehicle is operating normal without any issues at this time. Not sure if this is a common problem or not but Swanpoint also had the same issue. This would have been an expensive repair with the CPO warranty. The extended warranty has paid for itself several times

Who do you have for extended warranty and what is the level of the policy you have (silver, gold, platinum, or something of that nature)? Is this warranty generally easy to deal with and don't try to have you jump through hoops in order to get repairs paid for?

transmission malfunction repair CPO warranty

My auto correct changed with out to with, regarding the CPO BMW warranty.
The repair was completely covered as well as the rental car. Without the warranty it would have been a costly repair. It is the BMW FACTORY CPO platinum warranty. I wouldn't buy another BMW without an extended warranty. It appears several of us E70 X5 owner's have had the same issue going on at the same time. We all were diagnosed with a bad mechatronics box. Our problem was the fault code didn't make it an easy diagnosis. It took several tows to the dealership and several weeks of research to completing the repair.

BTW I found this video on how to switch your transmission into neutral when something is not working.
