My BMW Remote Mobile App Now Available

New mobile app lets customers access remote services for their vehicles

This app allows many BMW customers to access remote features for their vehicle by using their mobile device and the power of BMW Assist. These features include remotely locking and unlocking of doors, getting the location of their parked vehicle, and sending Google Local Search results to their vehicle. Additionally, some customers will even be able to send a command to sound the horn or flash the headlights of their BMW.

Customers who have an active BMW Assist Safety Plan, a compatible vehicle, and an Apple device running iOS 4.0 or later will be able to download the app to their device starting today via the Apple iTunes store. No changes are required to their BMW. My BMW Remote operates on the customer’s mobile device, sending remote commands to their BMW.

My BMW Remote includes the following functions in detail:
Vehicle Position – If the vehicle’s ignition is off, and it is located within 0.6 miles (1km) of the mobile device, the current vehicle location can be displayed on a map in the mobile device.
Google Local Search - Search for local businesses, restaurants, and more on the mobile device and send the details to the vehicle.
Remote Locking & Unlocking – Customers can remotely lock or unlock their vehicles, providing peace of mind if they are unsure whether they locked the vehicle in the parking lot or if they have accidently locked keys in the vehicle.
Remote Horn - send a remote command to sound the horn of your BMW to help locate the vehicle.
Remote Headlights – remote control of configurable exterior light functions to help locate the vehicle.

The remote features available to the customer will depend on which BMW model they have.

The following vehicles will have Remote Door Lock & Unlock, Google Local Search, and Vehicle Position available:

- 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, or 6 Series produced March 2008 or later

- X5 SAV or X6 SAC produced April 2008 or later

- Z4 Roadster from Model Year 2009 or later

The following vehicles will have Remote Horn and Remote Flash Headlights available, in addition to Remote Door Lock & Unlock, Google Local Search, and Vehicle Position:

- X3 SAV from Model Year 2011 or later

- 3 Series Sedan from Model Year 2012 or later

- 5 Series Gran Turismo from Model Year 2010 or later

- 5 Series Sedan from Model Year 2011 or later

- 6 Series from Model Year 2012 or later

- 7 Series from Model Year 2009 or later

My BMW Remote is just one of the many ConnectedDrive services available to BMW customers. BMW ConnectedDrive combines various elements from online applications, driver assistance systems, call center services and solutions for the integration of mobile devices. As a result, BMW customers are provided with an exceptional form of mobility, with more safety, more convenience, and more infotainment.

any idea why it's April 2008 or later? My BMWAssist subscription ran out a couple weeks ago anyway, but was wondering... what exactly changed in April of '08? ConnectedDrive with Google and all that came much later I thought - as in years later.

Another thing with regard to vehicle position - why would there be a 1km limit? It's just sending out the signal to the internet anyway isn't it?

No Droid phones??

Got the app, but MY BMW account login doesn't work and now says "your account has been locked, please contact ConnectedDrive hotline". Futile searches of BMW's website...

I was wondering the same thing.

If I had to guess, it would be due to a certain programming version of some module in the car. I'd bet if your car was up to most recent programming, that it would work.

I bought my 08 last year as a CPO, but I think there may still be some time left of the Assist deal. I'll call them to see if they'll give me the remainder of the account so I can at least give this a shot.

Its the switch over from the CDMA TCU to the GSM TCU (happened around the march/april 08 time frame). I unfortunately have the CDMA TCU...

Call 888-333-6118 to get it unlocked or you can use the SOS button in the car. Also note, login and password need to be in all caps.

drod 02-18-2012 09:43 PM

It was just like everyone said...

i downloaded the app and had problems logging in too...

finally called BMW Assist and they walked me through it..

all caps username... (which is email you registered for BMW Assist or My BMW online)

all caps password...

if you're locked out you'll need to call them to reset... and it will take up to 24hours..

finally registered it and got it to work... not that great an app if you ask me...

you get to remotely unlock/disarm the vehicle but it will not arm itself when you lock it again... a disclaimer reminds you of this so it is how they designed it... not sure why they kept this out...

there's no headlight or horn feature like the pics show...

but the vehicle locator is nice...

not really useful for anything else... kind of a waste of development efforts..

they should have developed a feature that will call your phone if your vehicle's alarm is triggered or moved (since it can communicate with it)

someone obviously forgot to complete the project...

You got this working on your '08? Was it after Apr '08 production?

Also I think it's more a post-proof-of-concept kind of thing. It has potential. Good idea about calling out for the alarm - the alarm as it is, is useless. Can barely hear it and it's not very intimidating.

drod 02-20-2012 05:41 PM

actually i just picked up my 12 x5 50i... the app was installed for the new vehicle...

the only real nice feature of this app is the ability to track the vehicle if stolen...

stlcity 02-21-2012 10:58 AM

Not for android yet?

I don't know when it will be.

jlam86 02-21-2012 07:44 PM

Where do we get the log in info from? I downloaded the app and now stuck lol

8ball 03-02-2012 01:02 AM

Would be nice to have remote start.

jayjay_dee 03-02-2012 01:29 PM

Account locked... yikes..

will have to try again after 1 hour as I requested for a new password, if that doesnt work, will have to wait 24 hours... ugh!!!

Can you login to Canadian equivalent of this site?

If not try calling the number in post #7 and they will help you out.

wickedwyrm 03-02-2012 06:00 PM

You can't use the app to track if it's stolen. If it is more than .6 miles away it tells you it can't give you the position for privacy reasons.

drod 03-03-2012 12:40 AM

the app actually sucks... not really useful at all....

you have to be within .6 miles to unlock/lock... and when you lock it does not arm the alarm... useless..

you can also track your vehicle but if it's stolen and driven or towed for more than a few blocks it won't let you track it... useless again...

my app for 2012 X5 didn't offer a flash headlights feature... useless again

and no remote horn... need i say it again?

so what do you use this app for?

to find your car in a large parking lot? don't you have the keyfob with panic button, lock/unlock, open trunk, etc for that?

totally useless in my opinion.... but something to brag about to those who have nothing...

btw... did you guys notice Chevy has a similar iphone app... that actually does everything above regardless of distance??

great job BMW... :stickpoke

GmoneyLI 03-03-2012 01:48 AM

With the Chevy u can turn ur car in remotely as well.

I tried using this stupid app and it takes about 10 minutes for my vehicle to unlock the doors after I initiate it from my phone.. And the app says vehicle status unavailable and when it shows my phone's location, it shows me walking through the neighbors yard, crossing the street, but I haven't moved from my bed lol

m3the01 04-19-2012 01:30 PM

I dont have the remote horn or flashing of the headlights option.

Only locate and lock/unlock...

Maybe cause were in Canada now?

stimulate 04-20-2012 05:58 AM

Google Search works great even if driving.

I really like this app now that it is fixed. The Google Local Search works quickly with my 2009 X5d. When you select the search field, the iPhone 4S lets you use the voice keyboard.

Search results in List is more useful than Map as the Map is zoomed out to the entire USA by default. I select the destination and Send to Car.

The destination appears in BMW Assist within 30 seconds. It renders the awkward Search by Name function available on the 2011 DVD useless.

icuc 04-20-2012 11:23 AM

Yeah BMW maps really sucks but still they charge 200 bucks for update.
