2012 BMW X5 (E70) Luggage Compartment options
I finally took a delivery of 2012 X5 xDrive50i last week (upgrade from 2008 X5 4.8i Sports). I love the car so far, it's really a much better and refined vehicle. However, there are a few things that slightly disappointed me. The sticker price on my vehicle is $87,145.00, and yet it’s missing simple option which I find to be very convenient. I’m referring to the storage package (Option 493), which comes with the lashing rails, straps on both sides of the storage compartment, and a little compartment on the left side. It’s all gone in my 2012 X5, and wasn’t even available when I was ordering my vehicle. I always carry some items in the cargo compartment, like basic set of cleaning items, some brushes, etc., and obviously securing all of it in cargo compartment is important.
I’m not sure how difficult would it be to retrofit the storage package, and if it’s even possible (I guess it shouldn’t be a big deal). Was there an option that I missed when ordering a vehicle, and as a result ended up with a basic cargo compartment? The other thing the DVD changer is gone. I understand that it's replaced with the internal hard drive, but why the space in the glove compartment can not be reclaimed. Also, I guess I underestimated M package paint chipping issue... I would greatly appreciate any comments . |
For $87K you can get the M, why 50i?

I don't think there is a carve-out compartment on the left side, at least its not listed in the Storage Package. The lashing-eyes may be under the cargo floor (guessing based on my X3), and the straps on the wheelwell sides are not available with the 3rd row seating- don't know if you ordered 3. row seats.
Hey, none of the X5s in Germany come standard with leather seats (€2.160) or metallic paint (€980), so the US, as always, still gets a good deal. |
Below is what Google Image search returns on this subject:

You must have missed some option.

My 2010 had the rails. The 2012 does not. Cost cutting by BMW.
I suspect the parts could be retrofitted. A |
I don't think it's cost cutting, but rather a careful manipulation by BMW to push the final pricetag up by making buyers add more options.

^^ What are the option codes for the rails for the 2012 X5 then?
|
sounds like a stupid question..but what do people use the trunk rails for besides the net which can be strung between all 4 points?
