Just got quoted $760. to replace steering angle sensor
 

does that sound about right??? is it necessary to even replace it? the active cornering malfunction indicator comes only the first time you crank it up, goes away after you restart it.
2007 x5 4.8, 58k miles

Hmmm, just had my steering angle sensor replaced and the SA mentioned that without the extended warranty I would have to pay around $1000. IDK if it's necessary to replace.

No idea on the time to install, but I'd say an hour or two - total, for an experienced mechanic. Just a WAG.

BMW knows, of course, that most customers have no choice and just pay whatever they demand. The SA will scare people with "oh we need to calibrate and program" and many just bend over.

Interesting. BMWUSA lists suspension as covered, but then another section of coverage info on their site they mention that suspension is NOT covered under the "wear and tear" area....or I read it wrong last time I read it.

^This is a area that everyone gets wrong- BMW and owners. Most people ask "is this part covered"...and even BMW assigns coverage decision based on parts..>BUT, the written terms of the warranty define coverage in terms of HOW something fails or WHY it fails.

For example a brake disc with marginal use explodes- covered. A brake disc wears out- not covered.


A steering angle sensor is not a 'wear' part- it is designed for an indefinite life, with no expectation it will wear out- it should be covered (unless they exclude it somewhere, but I dont thing so)

Is that your interpretation or do you have a citing for that? Not challenging you, just curious where you got that information.

just a thought could it be the battery? my steering angle sensor went off- they said it was receiving low voltage and a battery charge fixed it.


don't get me started on the random battery discharge thing.

the $$$$ bmw battery was replaced about 6 months ago and it looks like gainesville bmw will replace the sensor under the CPO. WOOOHOOO!

There's a guy on the e90 forum that fixed it by himself, I guess it should be similar on the e70.

Just did this 2000km ago, still good. Cleaned the disc and the clear plastic. Thanks for the link.

Had warning light on Active steering followed by DSC warning and 4x4 warning. Not always though, sometimes. But at least once everyday.

mine would reset for awhile then it just didnt work at all and the steering wheel would turn on its own while the car was driving straight. It was weird. My ext warranty covered it and it was a bout $800
