tunning Vs not tunning
Hello
Before bying my new x5 I Would like someone to tell me the pros and cons of having the x5 tunned thanks a lot |
Tuning, you mean?
Which model and which engine? |
35d M sport
|
Simply...
Pros: more HP more TQ and possibly better gas mileage, however, the add'l HP and TQ may have you on the throttle more. That's why is say possibly on the mpg. Cons: if you have an issue and the car has stored codes, you may lose your warranty. Codes can be cleared of you have the right tools, however. |

The safest bet it to accept the possibility that you will pay the bill if the motor or tranny takes a dump and BMW gets wind. I'd be OK with the risk after you had 20k and a year on the car. |
thanks a lot!
the car has already 30k miles.....and it has been tunned the last 2 months.... Someone told me that by tunning any car you may have an issue with the axle...is that true? |
Tuned cars are usually abused............ Otherwise why would you tune in the first place?

But this is the price you pay when you up the power on ANYTHING. Enjoy A |

"should" or "shouldn't", I will not say.
But I can tell you that a car driven hard and shifted at full throttle repeatedly will NOT last as long as one driven by my wife. Just the nature of these things. If you will be trading the car it, if you have a warranty, if you don't care about maybe paying a large repair bill, just thrash it. But letting the tranny shift without load, not being at full throttle, will lead to longer transmission life. If this is 100k, or 200k, I cannot venture a guess- we've seen failures in plenty of X53s as I recall.... has BMW made new trannies that are immune to failure? Probably not. So nobody can make lifetime predictions- but I think most can agree that driving more energy into a tranny will lead to accelerated wear. The only thing left to bicker about is the rate of this accelaration and if we will experience this during our ownerships. IMO., of course. |
Fair enough.

Could someone answer me....
If u have may have all these issues... why then BMW gives you the option to update the software of the car? since it can be downloaded from the BMW manufacturer website |
nobody knows what the hell you are talking about.

makes me think..... didn't someone mention on another post that if you opt for the m-sport pkg you also have an option to increase hp/tq by from the default by selecting another line item?
i can't remember the option code but i do remember someone mentioning it.. was this just for the X5m or was it also available for 50i w/m-sport? i have a 2012 50i w/m-sport and this was not available... obviously i can't confirm at the moment if that's the case then BMW must also be tuning these engines if they're offering an increase in power option... |

One point is that a complete approach (in the opinion of some of us) to a tune involves new software that keeps all the standard safeties in place, vs fooling various sensors with offsets. A second point is that if you take more hp out of a given engine, whether by changing rating or duty cycle, it wears faster. That may or may not impact any owner during their ownership period, as they may not reach the wear limit. |
yeh or English could be the OPs second language.
tuning or "Ton-ing" as a friend of mine is prone to say, will exasperate issues that the manufacturer knows to exist but that they built to a tolerance not to be exceeded within their warranty parameters. they built it, they back it for a specified period of time. you mess with it and it breaks you will most likely pay to fix it. if that is how you roll OP............ go for it. personally ard, i believe an E70 should be flogged early and often. drive it like ya stole it in hopes that it breaks within the warranty period. i have 12K left on my extended warranty and i am shopping for a new transmission. it has started to get a touch clunky recently. if it can be broken, i am the guy to do it. whether i get in under the wire....................... this is not one of my strong points. ;) |
so guys what exactly we mean by tunning???? and what is the software update on the car?

Oh.... "Tuning" is when someone changes the factory software in the DME (or DDE for diesels) to change the way fuel, timing, boost, etc is controlled- ideally they 'optimize' this for the very best performance. (Hence "tune"). Often times this removes limits on torque/hp and boost, so you get significantly higher perforamnce. (It is MUCH less effective on normally aspirated cars) The "software update" on Idrive is for the infotainment system, AFAIK. I am actually unaware of any updates released by BMW for this method. |
What's this nonsense ard? The dude asked about "tunning"! ;)
|
My mistake....
tunning is when you smack the DDE with a large fish. |
OP- Don't take offense...I can't write or speak greek, so you're one (or more) up on me.
|
^^ I agree, its all fun and games until ard smacks the DDE with a large fish.
|
should I buy or not this tuned car?
|
which tuned car? any pictures?

Do you know WHAT was done to the car? In writing... "DDE was tuned by XYZ with their HDHFD program" Given that this is a used car, there is a whole host of issues besides tuning that would concern me. You should assume that it no longer will be covered by the BMW drivetrain warranty. (Not sure what this is in Cyprus) What kind of driver was the prior owner? Are you getting the car inspected before purchase? |

For starters the disclaimer... I understand everyone has their own opinion on this and i am simply stating mine.
I have a 600hp+ car that is unreal, i luv it. I built it myself and designed many of the parts, I also have a 2012-35D, i just dont see the point in tuning these vehicles. It is an SAV, not a car. I luv the car like feel to this 5000+lb vehicle but common, it is still a SAV or truck or whatever u wanna claim it is. For sure, it is not a car. All these high speed posts, what the hell are you expecting when you take an SUV up to those speeds??? If you loose control there is no spinning, u will flip, likely die, and possibly kill someone else. I was tempted to get the X5M, but then i remembered the purpose of the vehicle. I snowboard, mountain bike and i wanted good fuel economy and seldon fill-ups. Now this is just an opinion, and maybe a waste of space, but seriously? |
^^^ We agree, and I've been tempted to say the same...but not everyone has 2, 3 cars to play with.... you've got to keep in mind that many only have one from which all their automotive desires must be realized. (Looks, power, sound, etc....)
Once you accept that, the rest follows. :) A |
Thank you all for your replies....
The car is used and imported form UK... First registration date in uk jan 2009. I am going to take pictures and uploded them for you... What part of the car shall I take picture?? Or u ask for general appearance thanks |
hello to all!
I have been to the dealer and took many important pictures of the car and the autologic hardware...he explained to me what this computer works and also gave me some information about the CIP (Codding Individualization Programming) Your opinion is critical before going to spend 60000 euro to buy this car. How can I upload the images???? thanks in advance |
