Sprint Booster?
I just saw this "BMW Sprint Booster" from ECS Tuning that is supposed to remove some of the throttle lag in the drive-by-wire throttle. I have an E70 35d which has the notorious lag from a standstill.
Has anyone tried this on the 35d or any of the turbo X5's? I'm curious to see if anyone's experienced some improvement in the inherent lag. |
+1. I would be very interested. The lag is ridiculous and often dangerous (those left turns).

From what I understand, all the booster does is change the amount of pedal travel needed to apply X amount of throttle.
Being a bit more liberal with the throttle pedal would accomplish the same thing. |
Then it wouldn't get rid of the horrible pause. No matter how liberal you are with the pedal, the pause is there.

That's not something I've noticed -maybe the 4.8is and X5M don't have the same issues?

I did not have a good experience with SprintBooster (on my 2008 X5 4.8i). I have a long post about that.
I can say that when I reset my throttle response, the X5 was noticeably responsive and smoother. I think that I probably need to do this annually (I only did after owning the X5 for 4 years). |

I have the Sprintbooster installed on my M6 and it's perfect for removing the delay. Would highly recommend this if the throttle delay is a PITA for you.

Sprintbooster amplifies the signal coming off the pedal in a simple linear fashion and while it eliminates the initial lag you end up with a bunch of dead space at the end of the travel. Pedalbox does it in a more complex manner that alters the response curve.

Did this procedure on my 2011 X5 and it made a difference. Not quite sure what causes this issue but it seems to be a good routine to do at a minimum once a year if not every 6 months.
Or like mentioned, probably no harm whatsoever in doing it every time you fill up to get you in the habit. Personally, I looked at the "SprintBooster" and don't feel it's worth $300.00. That's an awful lot of money for something like this. I'm about to do the referenced method here on my 2013 that is a year old now with about 10K miles on it. I've noticed it slowly getting worse over the past few months. Additionally, I usually add a quality fuel injector cleaner once or twice a year to keep things clean and it helps with that occasional rough idle at start. Quote:

Thought I'd chime in on the whole Sprint Booster debate.
Installed one today, as a Christmas Gift to my SAV, and it feels like my 4.8i X5 just went on a 1500lb diet. Really incredible the difference in how much more responsive the vehicle is. So, for those who like to say that "this is snake oil" and "don't waste your money", all I can say is that you are the one missing out here, but that's your choice. Glad I didn't listen to you. I've read all of the technical details (I'm a BS EE so I get all of the graphs and details of the theory behind it, and they are technically correct) and I was also a sceptic, but thought I should keep an open mind and try one. In my 30+ years of driving the "throttle by wire" has been one of the worst ideas from the auto industry, for people who really like to drive. I was in the design labs when the concept was first being tested, and you can't have paddle shifters and DSG transmissions without electronic throttle control, it just doesn't work. So we do have some good stuff from the technology, but the theory has been dumbed down to basically control our urge to have some fun with our daily drivers. Yes, I was doing the BMW adaptive throttle reset every time I filled up my tank, and kept thinking "why do I have to do this?" every time I did it. Why do I have to "reset" the single most enjoyable part of driving my $85k BMW because someone decided how my car should think about my driving style? The reset changes the shift points, and makes the throttle marginally more linear and a bit less "soft" in the curve it is fitting to your input. The "better feeling" is nothing at all like the SB... As a frame of reference, I have one of those "old cars (95 TT Stealth w/495+HP)" with an antiquated metal cable connecting my foot to the throttle body, not the work of a SW programmer who decided to keep the car "civil and tame" for the masses. Probably not his choice either, BTW. It's really a good thing that driving is more than graphs and technical data, or it would be a really boring experience. We wouldn't ever need to test drive a car, we could just look at the data and buy from there... Kind of like a PC. I'm not going to try to convince you to buy one, that's your choice, and frankly, your loss if you don't at least try it... Return it if you don't like it, you're out 30 minutes of your time (15 to install and another 15 to remove) and a few $$s in shipping. If you feel that "just pushing harder" on an un-responsive, filtered, dumbed-down excuse for controlling your car is the best option for you, continue in your ignorant ways... You just don't know any better, and neither did I, until today. Let the flames begin. |
Glad you had a positive experience, why not just drive in sport mode all the time?

My X hasn't been out of Sport Mode since the day I bought it.
Not the same thing at all... The differences I described are in Sport Mode :thumbup: |
Curious - have you noticed much worse MPG w/ sprint booster? It's at least affected somewhat correct?

Not yet, but I can't imagine it will get much lower than my typical 12 MPG :D
If it does go down a little, it'll be well worth it... Really enjoying the "new X5"... |
Installed SB yesterday, it's night and day. I am glad I had on my X, now it's more responsive. I love it on RED all the time now.
