another "good deal" or not thread
So I've finally decided to let my 4.6is go and upgrade to something newer with the 3rd row. the current offer I've found is:
2011 X5 3.5i Premium Space Gray Black Nevada Leather 10K miles Pkgs: Convenience Technology Cold Weather Premium Sound Comfort Access Roof Rails Nav Combox Controller (not sure what this is) Sat Radio Running Boards Panoramic roof 19" Wheels Price: $53,800 Before you start telling me to look at new 2012s, I have to buy slightly used in order to bring it back to Canada. Thoughts? thx |
Tell them to toss in a BMW Platinum Warranty...but make sure it will be honored in Canada.
|
That looks to be about a 3500 package and so far I can't find anything saying it will be honored in Canada. I'll have to call bmwca to find out. And if they won't throw it in, is it a reasonable price?
|
Found another one, specs as follows:
12895 Miles 2011 X5 3.5i Premium Black Black Nevada Leather 12985K miles Pkgs: 3rd row seating Convenience Technology Cold Weather Premium Sound Comfort Access Roof Rails Nav Combox Controller (not sure what this is) Sat Radio Running Boards Panoramic roof 19" Wheels HUD Says MSRP was 65K and change Looks like invoice is 59540 ( from carquotes) Plus $750 destination plus $250 advertising they're asking 56,988 What say you? |
Sounds like a nice car, Doc...(and, so did the first one), but black in
Alberta winters, eh?! No clue on how good either deal is; just wanted to post/chime in. GL, mD |
Thanks mD! The family expanded and while I should be looking at a minivan I can't bring myself to do it. Been out of touch with the whole pricing scheme for some time now so I'm looking to the savvy young guys for advice :D
|
the deals suck.
But I am guessing you have some need to buy used and import??? Makes it hard to evaluate |
well the same vehicle in Canada is 26K more so I'm trying to find a decent deal. Can buy new unless the dealer is willing to go with MSO to get title first.
thx |
You know that 3rd row is pretty much useless don't you?
I used mine, for the first time in over a year, this past weekend. My normal size 13 year-old found it so uncomfortable because there was not enough leg room. I had to put the middle rows seats all the way forward -- which resulted in complaints from 3 teenage boys. So I had 4 unhappy kids in the car... |
yup. but right now my oldest is 5, so I can get a few years out of it...
|
any cars for sale here that would work? like the guy that hates his diesel??
|
haven't seen any in the for sale forum. If you say it's a bad deal at that price, what would a fair price/offer be? You see, in Canada, building a 2012 with similar options comes in at $90K. Used 2011s here don't have nearly the options (for some reason almost all of them have the M package but that's about it) and those that are for sale are 60-70K with 40K Kms (24K miles) on them. So buying cross border opens up the choices while allowing to save a bit. I wish I could build an 2012 in the US, use incentives and bring it back, but I can't. BMWNA rules.
|
Dr.,
Can you pm where you were quoted 3500 for the platinum extended warranty by BMW? |
Quote:
That's the problem- your particular situation makes OUR opinions useless. You might explore some options for buying a new car in the usa. F 'bmw rules'...remember, they are BMWs rules and apply to dealers- NOT YOU. I would imagine there are states that would allow you to buy a car without use tax...or states where someone can buy and then immediately sell a car (and not "use" it) and thereby avoid a use tax... the dealer types here go nuts with this kind of talk, but YOU just need to avoid any legal mistep- not a BMW misstep. A |
While you can try and force BMWNA's hand, getting your warranty honoured at a BMW dealer in Canada is at their discretion, so I don't think it is worth calling their bluff on a nearly new vehicle that is likely to require attention during the warranty period. You will already be giving up the prepaid maintenance, but the warranty is worth something IMO.
Just buy a used one. |

Ard you're correct in asking whether it's a good deal from a US or a Canadian perspective. From a Canadian perspective if I bought at their asking price it wold still be a significant savings over a more local purchase. However, knowing that there should be room for negotiation on the price (from a US perspective) i'm asking "what is a fair offer on said vehicle"? |
You should be able to get a 2011 with 10,000 miles or so now for high $40's with the options that you are looking for. I purchased a 2011 x5d last year from the US (New York) and a X3(New Jersey) and the X5 was in the ballpark of $53,500 with 8200 miles. (6 month lease turn in). No issues bringing back and have been to the local dealer a few times for maintance and one warranty issue with no problems. I wouldnt be surprised if you could get a 2012 now for mid $50's or so with the options you want.
|
Thanks jamonge for the info. I have searched for 12s with the same options but so far come up empty handed. However, it gives me some idea of what to offer on the vehicle. I'll start at 48 and see where they go.
Incidentally, I used to live in Quispamsis :) |
well...they laughed at my offer and dropped their price by $2k....

You can buy new as a Canadian and import it, you just need to find the right dealer to sell it to you - lol! Also, BMW in Canada will need to "bless it" by performing some upgrades if you want to keep your warranty intact. Estimate a $4 to $5K.
|
have you found such a dealer? The blessing can be done in many ways, without the $4-$5K hit...

Actually not bad. Do keep in mind that the poor sap that bought it new for 61k probably got 49k in trade now that he got in trouble or the wife hated the whatever... Will they CPO it for that price??? BIG benefit (if it is good in Canada...) A |
funny you mention CPO. I did ask that and no they won't. So I'm trying to formulate a decent offer. It doesn't have the rims or running boards I wanted, and I did want black interior. I can live with beige, throw the running boards on, and watch for a deal on 214s. that said, what's a reasonable offer? My assumption is they won't move much.
edit: they say they'll CPO it for 59K... I'll have to find out if CPO will be valid in Canada. edit2: CPO not valid in Canada. |
Quote:
I'd say you are close enough to finanilze this- just confirm the CPO in canada. (Try not to ask the dealer, read the CPO documents- google) Given your limited options in CA, the extra few $$ you might be leaving on the table isn't material A |
I checked ad CPO does not carry over to Canada. So the warranty option is no good for me.
|
well they dropped to 56K and will have running boards installed so I took it. Now I just have to find the rims. thx for all the advice.

didnt think to compare it to BMW residuals.
Invoice was 74500, average paid was 70,100.. MSRP 81,000. 2Yr residual was 68% (likely inflated by BMW) , a more realistic residual would be maybe 64%, $51,840... got it for $49300. $21000 below average price paid. Where did you get 10-12,000 under invoice/pricepaid as a guideline? $10-12000 reduction in 2 years seems way low, Id expect $20,000. |
