Fender flares??

Is it nesscary to add them when puting the 20" wheels on? I was looking at wheels on eBay and saw them.

ZuerstBMW 04-22-2012 05:18 AM

You dont have to, but it looks better because wheels wont stick out as much and kick debris up at your car.

x5TT 04-22-2012 06:08 AM

I have a spare one set, because I just put aerodynamic body kit and have to take it out. PM if you are interested.

After looking at the pictures on here, everyone w/214's has the flares. I didn't think I needed anything else but the wheels cause my X5 has the sport package w/the 19's I'm wondering how it would look w/o the flares.

wch X5 04-22-2012 04:55 PM

The rear tires in particular will stick out. Some like it but it will lead to more stuff being thrown up on the plastic and paint behind your wheels.

The flares are easy to install and make the overall vehicle look more aggressive but not obviously aftermarket.

Makes sense. I'm going to order them from ECS today. Now just have to find wheels. I was going to buy a set of reps on eBay, but after doing a lot of reading on here Im not sure if I want reps now. I also don't want to spend 5k on wheels and tires.

Maybe someone can anwser this one for me. I found a set of REP 214's the fronts are 9.5 and the rears are 10.5 being a .5 inch narrower than OEM wheels are the flares a must, if I go with the REPS?

Hammer 04-23-2012 10:12 AM

It's not only about the width of the wheels but the offset also. Do you know what offset the 214 reps you're getting?

45 Front and 30 Rear I'm sorry to ask so many dumb questions, I'm not good with this stuff.

You don't have to run them, but they do look really good with aggressive 20 inch wheels.

Hansel,

I bought my flares from ECS a couple weeks ago after adding my 214s...

At first, I did not want or think I needed the flares, but I went ahead with adding them.

Now, I am 100% sold on the flares, they are a must!!! $300 well spent...

I ordered them today. I'll have them Thursday. My wheels will be here tomm. Did you do the install on them yourself? If so how hard was it?

brewhahog 04-23-2012 06:05 PM

My tire & wheel guy charged me $50 to add them when I added the wheels and tires.

He said they were easy as long as you have some type of rivet tool, which he had. I am not a handy man, so I would have paid him another $100 to add the flares.

Hansel22 04-23-2012 06:06 PM

$50 isn't bad at all. I'm sure BMW is going to charge me 200-300

rh71 04-24-2012 07:53 AM

^ you definitely need the rivet tool unless you want to struggle with pulling the old rivets out with pliers and a screwdriver that didn't work too well for us. Yes, 2 of us and we still had a hard time. The rivet tool was about $25 online if I recall correctly and you could definitely do it yourself with one. In hindsight, I would pay $50 to have someone do it if I had someone willing. It takes 30-60 minutes depending on experience.

brewhahog 04-24-2012 08:57 AM

I forgot to answer the other question, yes my wheels are OEM...I would have gone with reps but eschantra gave me a great deal on his original 214s, I then paid $200 to have the set powder coated, there were a few minor cosmetics scrapes from before.

brewhahog - your X looks great with the flares on it!

brewhahog 04-24-2012 07:21 PM

Thank you, I'm very happy with the setup.
