Tire Wear vs. Type Of Engine
 

I am noticing an interesting differences in longevity of my tires when I went from 2008 4.8 to 2011 3.5d.

I've kept good records of tire wear (checked every 3 months) for both cars, and so far I am seeing somewhat better longevity (almost by 50%) of tires on my diesel X5. Same roads, same type of driving (hwy vs. local), about same temps.

Perhaps 4.8 was "too much power" for the tires, so they wore off faster ?

Does anyone else sees similar results? Any theories?

It all depends on the compound used to make the tires. I am experiencing the exact opposite as you. Last tires were harder all seasons and the current set are soft summer performance.

Do you have any cupping on the outside edges. My 20"s are terrible and getting louder and louder and tram like crazy. I have a little over 9k miles on them. I still have a fair amount of tread.

What a difference during the winter with an 18" a/s set up compared to these 214s. Although I would never give up the stance with the 214s

Same tire sizes?

Same alignment (toe) specs?

It has nothing to do with the power, everything to do with tire compound and suspension setup.

can you actually get Sport on a diesel?

i would think with all that torque the diesel would burn tires faster.

That is what I thought, too...

The 20s have little cupping, as for noise - hard to tell, it depends on road surface. Here in NJ we have mix of everything, and potholes ! I have ~17K on them, and I think I can get another 5-7K miles.

I was comparing my winter set with Bridgestones, which are same as what I used to have on my 4.8. Maybe it is because I am using these bridgestones during winter only, while on the 4.8 I've used them around they year.
