Should I trade my E70 or not?
Hi guys, I live in Argentina and I own an 2008 X5 3.0si, with 84.000 miles.
I was considering trading my SAV in for a 2012 X35i. Thing is, a new one here in Argentina sells for 110.000 u$s plus some extras. When I bought mine four years ago, I paid 96.000 for it. I looked at 3 BMW dealers, and the three of them agree on a valuation of mine of about 55.000 dollars, more or less. I'd like to trade my ride, but losing 50% of its value in 4 years seems a little too much. Their argument is that my truck has too many miles on, which I don't agree, but that's what they all say. The truck is in good condition. I know the price of the same vehicle is about the half in the US, but is it normal that you lose 50% of the value within 4 years of use and 84K miles? What should I do? The truck runs perfectly, but if I keep it, it would be even harder to sell it. Or should I use it until it shows its aging and sell it for a lot less? |
How many miles is too many for this truck?

Of course the dealer will try to give you as little as possible for it and the high mileage is just their way to push the price down. Unfortunately you have gotten the same results from multiple dealers. Clearly, they work from the same handbook when it comes to trade-ins.
How about trying to sell it privately? If you are not in a big hurry that would be the best way to get the most money for it. |
we avg about 12k miles per year here so yes that's a lot of miles. What are other 4 year old 3.0s selling for near you?
As above, you will get the best value selling privately but that can be a lot of work. |
Other 2008 3.0s are offered on the net from about 70,000 dollars to 80,000 when they have low mileage.
Private selling is a lot of work, mostly because I travel a lot, and there is always the risk of having claims from the buyer in case something stops working on the truck. What makes me think twice about trading the truck, and resign half of its original price in just four years, is that its working perfectly, it hasn't give me almost any trouble even when I used it a lot on country, dusty, rocky roads. Anyways, thank you both very much for your advices! |
