Issue with E70

Hello everyone!

A couple of weeks ago I traded in my e53 for a new to me e70. Love it, It is a 2008, space gray metallic, black interiors, it's a beauty; however,

For the last couple of days it has been doing something that has me worried... about 90% of the times when I start the X there is a loud noise coming from underneath the X, almost like 2 metals banging together pretty hard. Exactly at the same time, there is slight lurch forward that is noticeable to my and my passangers. Now I have read on some of the postings here about the famous lurch forward, but haven't read a post that correlates it with the noise (almost coming from the tranny, which is kinda scary!). Also, when driving around town when I am coming to a stop most of the times the X comes to a stop but right at the very end it lurches forward again (I believe the some of the posts I found on the search talk about this)...

From the posts I read, the fix for the lurch is to bring it on the dealer and it would be a software update? is my understanding correct? or is there something else?

Also, has anyone experienced the noise I am talking about combined with the lurch when you start your X? Hopefully someone out there can relate.

Thank you for your time! appreciate your feedback.

As far as the lurch when stopping, I think that's "normal" and it's caused by the tranny downshifting.

Welcome to owning the E70, i have the same year and specs and color as yours.
The loud thud or metal noise is the transfer case engaging - I have the same issue with mine. Our infamous BMW dealer here in the Boston area informed me that my transfer case is going and I should change it - if you are under the warranty or CPO, etc. you maybe lucky for a free replacement - I am on the otherhand am out of the warranty and no extended so its about 4 grand. Im' gunne drive till it dies :) My indy told me its probably small fix as in the actuator is dying that engages the transfer case gears.

By the way how many miles do you have on your X? My noise is not always, every few days I hear it.

Metal on metal

I also have a 2008. The metal on metal "bang" I think you are describing I believe is a service bulletin. It happened to me in the service area at the dealership in front of my service advisor. They updated the software on the vehicle and it never happened again.

Do you know what the TSB number/details are?
I am now curious to know this as I was thinking my entire transfer case is bad... It may also help other users out too.
