Seatbelt locked!

I have a 2007 X5 and I lowered the 2 back seats and when I raised the seat back up it wouldn't budge. The middle seatbelt is locked up and won't allow the seat back to raise. Any ideas?

I'm assuming the seatbelt was clipped in when you did this. Try raising the other seat and then squeezing your hand in the gap between the cushion and the back to release the seatbelt. the other thing to do is to try pulling the seatbelt down towards the floor and see if it will release that way.

No it wasn't clicked in. Since the belt reel comes out of the top of the seat and is anchored in the bottom seat, when you lower a seatback, the slack is taken up by the reel. In this case it locked in the down position and now there is no slack to raise the seat back up.

Ok; try putting your full weight on the back of the seat to see if it compresses the cushions enough and then try gently pulling the belt towards the floor - don't tug it sharply as that would lock it again. The Inertia reel has locked and so needs to have a bit of movement to release. If that doesn't work then off to the dealer.....

**EDIT** A bit of research suggests that the above won't work either as the inertia reel has a tilt sensor in it that won't allow it to unlock unless it is vertical, so looks like you need to visit the dealer unless you are prepared to unbolt the seatback and take the reel out youself.

other thought sprung to mind. If you have third row seat you might be able to unbolt the bottom seatbelt anchor from below. Don't know if this would work on cars without third row.

This problem happened to my mothers 2001 X5. I tried my hardest to fix the SOB but couldnt do it. She took it in to an independant shop for them to fix and guess how they fixed it? With a pair of scissors. The SOBs cut the belt. At least they didnt charge her.
