Any current ideas on extended coverage?

Hi All,

Searched the forum and doesnt seem to be much current info on extended warranty coverage pricing. I have been emailing dealers to get pricing on 84/100 Platinum extended coverage, and have been quoted $5430, and $5930... with about 10 other emails still not answered. Am I wrong in thinking that there is room to negotiate on these warranties? These dealers have told me the prices are "set".

**UPDATE**

have received a few replies from dealers and most are willing to negotiate. Heard from one dealer that $4650 is their cost on the 84month/100k platinum package. not sure if I believe that or not.

this is what I have received... (contrary to a member saying emailing dealers doesn't work)
I hope these numbers will help other members get a better price on extended coverage for our X5's
Gold: (not tax)
84month/70K $3,600
84/100K $4,300

Platinum: (no Tax)
84/70K $4,150
84/100K $4,900

Emails? Duh. Why should they bother? For all they know you are BMWNA or another dealer.

Are you emailing the sales people????

It is the finance group that sells the warranty... you need a negotiation strategy and the ability to call and speak to humans.

I chose to email after reading a post here from 2009-10 that suggested emailing a bunch of dealers nationwide for the best price. I have no problem calling if that seems to be a better route.

An extended warranty from BMW still does not cover everything the 4-yr factory warranty does. I went with Warranty Direct for $3k and they are very reputable. The biggest difference people will tell you is that BMW's warranty will pay out with no hassle, but if you're out of warranty anyway, you may be better off finding an independent shop who's familiar with BMWs. I am out of warranty and yesterday and while at the dealer for an oil change (I have a discount for them), they tried to tell me it takes 6 book hours to replace a transmission sleeve that's leaking ATF since they have to "drop the transmission" to even get to it. It will cost over $1k for this. Then I found a Youtube video of some BMW dealer service tech doing it on a 5-series in a 3-minute time-lapse video that didn't seem to time-lapse too much... the tranny didn't need to be dropped either (do I really want them playing with that?). I'd recommend going to independent shops for repair jobs anyway. They don't try and get every dollar out of insurance companies, and they aren't as likely to mess with your car more than they have to. At the very least, talk to Warranty Direct and compare.

Thanks, I will look into Warranty Direct. I will say that I have had a bit of luck with the emails. BMW of South Hampton emailed this morning saying they would be happy to match/beat any price I had already been given. I have read that the dealer has between 15-25% margin on warranties.

I'm shopping too, and so far the cheapest quotes were $3,520 for Gold and $4.020 for Platinum, both 6/100.

From what I have heard from friends its worth the extra to do the platinum, who gave you the $4k quote for platinum?

Dunno what the policies on this site are, but it's a sponsor on another forum that ends with ...fest.

This is why most dealers refuse to negotiate via email. They will give you MSRPs, but next thing you know people are posting names, emails, prices...it can be a mess for them.

When sponsors give prices, MOST people do not publish these... or if they publish a price, now WHERE they got them.

Finally, a technique I've used is to establish your 'most favored' dealership- perhaps local, perhaps the one you've used before, maybe the servicing dealer, whatever.... then shop for the very best price. Once you have that, give the most favored the opportunity to earn your business. Tell them 'just need to match it'.

I know this is probably not popular, but the profit margin on a BMW plan as discussed above is probably a few hundred. IMO. This is why many dealers push non-BMW.

I say f..k dealers; this is Internet, nothing is sacred (whether you like and agree with it or not). If you don't want to sell at price X to person B who wants to pay the same as person A for whatever reason - friendship, special promo, etc etc. - just say so. There may be a reason someone is willing to pay a higher price, but it should be a consumers' educated choice.

If such approach violates policies of this particular site - no problem, we'll just move the discussion elsewhere.
